Roll reads two things about your photos more accurately. Evenly underexposed photos are now recognised. Until now Roll only looked at the extremes of the histogram, so a photo that was simply too dark slipped through. Dark but sharp photos no longer count as blurry. Sharpness is now measured against a photo's own contrast. On iOS 27, photos you rate three stars or more are protected, like favourites. Roll refreshes its analysis once for this — on its own while charging, or in Settings › Photos. — Jan

Deciding and deleting are two different things now. Apple's delete dialog used to turn up a few seconds after every decision. Twenty stacks meant twenty interruptions for a question you only need to answer once. THREE STEPS • Set aside — tap a photo to keep it or set it aside. Photos you set aside collect in a list. They stay in your library. • Let go — when you are ready, you let the whole list go in one step. The photos leave your library for Apple's Recently Deleted, where you can bring them back for 30 days. • Apple's Photos app — the last step is not in Roll: empty Recently Deleted once, or wait 30 days, and your space is back. THE LIST "Set aside to let go" is a surface of its own now, with its own row. Look through it, take a single photo back, or let the whole list go at once. Roll brings it up where you were going to stop anyway — never in the middle of a stack. The undo pill is gone, because there is nothing left to undo: nothing leaves your library until you let the list go. Onboarding shows the three steps as three steps, including the last one. Roll used to take about 4.5 seconds to hand you the next stack. It now takes about 0.4. FASTER That's the change you'll feel first. Keep or let go, and the next stack is simply there — no waiting between decisions, no screen sliding away and back. Same queue, same choices, about ten times less time in between. A QUIETER LOOK Roll has been redesigned. Everything around your photos is black, white and gray now; orange shows up only where there's something to do. The grid shows your shots raw, with nothing sitting on top of them. THE QUEUE SHOWS PHOTOS Up next is a card with the actual pictures in it, not a button. Series appear as strips of photos, so you can see what's coming before you open it. A NEW ICON Roll has a new icon, Minimal. If you prefer the one you have, keep it — both are in Settings.
