Never miss the aurora again. Active Aurora is a free aurora forecast and alert app for the northern lights (aurora borealis) and the southern lights (aurora australis), with live tracking for over 167,000 locations worldwide.
Set your location once and Active Aurora watches the sky for you. When aurora activity rises near you, you get an instant push or email alert, so you can stop refreshing and head outside at the right moment.
AURORA ALERTS THAT MATTER
• Instant alerts when aurora activity climbs at your location
• Choose your level, from Minor to Severe
• Extra alerts for solar wind shocks, substorms and IMF (Bz) surges
• Push notifications, email, or both, with your choice of alert sound
LIVE AURORA FORECAST
• A live activity dial showing current aurora conditions at a glance
• 1-hour and 3-hour aurora forecasts tailored to your location
• 3-day Kp index forecast with the best viewing times highlighted
• Live aurora map with the auroral oval and real-time sighting reports
SKY WATCH: LET YOUR PHONE KEEP WATCH
No more setting an alarm every hour to check the sky. Point your phone at the night sky, turn on Sky Watch and go to sleep. It watches all night and sounds an alarm the moment it spots aurora. What the camera sees is never stored or uploaded.
SPACE WEATHER DATA FOR AURORA CHASERS
• Solar wind speed, density and Bz / IMF
• Kp index and geomagnetic storm levels (G1 to G5)
• Substorm strength from ground magnetometers
• Hemispheric power, GOES data and detailed charts
WHY ACTIVE AURORA
Most aurora apps just repeat the global Kp index. Active Aurora combines satellite solar wind data with ground magnetometers across three continents to give a local reading for where you actually are. That works whether you're chasing the northern lights in Iceland, Norway, Finland, Canada, Alaska or Scotland, or the southern lights in New Zealand, Tasmania and southern Australia.
Free to use, with no account needed to get started.
