Green means swim, red means wait. In the Americas and the central and eastern Pacific, ClearToSwim turns nearby lightning into a stoplight the whole deck understands.
Is it clear to swim? ClearToSwim turns lightning detection into the one
signal every pool deck already understands: a stoplight.
Set your pool's location and ClearToSwim watches for lightning nearby,
using NOAA's GOES weather satellites. A strike inside your evacuation
radius turns the light red and starts the wait clock; every new strike
restarts it. When the wait runs out, the light turns green again. No
radar squinting, no group-chat debate, no one person stuck making the call.
THE FREE APP
- A red-and-green stoplight for one pool of your own, plus up to three
more shared with you
- The recognized aquatic default, built in: evacuate at 10 miles, reopen
30 minutes after the last strike
- A live map of nearby strikes, color-aged so you can watch a storm pass
- Closed and all-clear alerts to your phone, even with the app closed
- Pool hours: always on, or sunrise to sunset, so nobody gets a 3am
alert for an empty pool
CLEARTOSWIM PRO
- The amber lamp lights: yellow caution when lightning lands between your
evacuation radius and your caution ring, with the pool still open, and a
steady amber countdown when a closed pool is about to reopen
- The caution ring on the map, the wider zone that caution watches
- Your own evacuation radius, caution ring, and wait timer, per pool
- More than one pool of your own, up to 10 monitored at once
- Caution and reopening alerts on top of closed and open
- Lightning strike notifications out to your caution ring, not just your
evacuation radius
- Custom pool hours, set separately for opening and closing, with either
end able to follow the sun
- Pool sharing: hand a pool to a sitter, neighbor, or family member, set
up on their phone with their own alerts
- No ads
- Family Sharing: up to six people in your Apple Family get Pro through Apple
WHERE IT WORKS
The GOES satellites sit over the Americas and the Pacific, so that is where
ClearToSwim reads lightning: North, Central and South America, the Caribbean,
Hawaii and the central and eastern Pacific, out to about 52 degrees north and
south. Alaska, most of Saskatchewan and nearly all of New Zealand sit past the
edge of that view, as do Europe, mainland Africa, the Middle East, Asia and
Australia. You can still add a pool anywhere, and the app labels it plainly
when no lightning feed reaches it, or when neither satellite sees all the sky
around it, rather than showing a calm light it cannot stand behind.
HONEST BY DESIGN
ClearToSwim is an informational aid, not a safety guarantee. Always follow
official warnings. If you see lightning or hear thunder, get out of the
water and take shelter in a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle.
Wait until 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning to the water.
Lightning data comes from satellites and takes time to detect and deliver,
and no system catches every strike. A person onsite always makes the final
call. NOAA does not endorse ClearToSwim.
Auto-renewing subscription: ClearToSwim Pro, $4.99 per month or $29.99 per
year in the United States. Prices elsewhere are Apple's local equivalents and
are shown before you buy. Pro adds the amber lamp and the caution ring, your
own radius and wait timers, custom pool hours, caution and reopening alerts,
lightning notifications out to your caution ring, more than one pool of your
own, pool sharing, and no ads. ClearToSwim monitors up to 10 of your pools at
a time.
Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. A
subscription renews automatically for the same period unless canceled at least
24 hours before the period ends, and is managed in your Apple Account settings.

Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
This update makes the whole app change together with the light, and adds a deck display for Pro.
- The stoplight, the words beside it and the timer bar now change at the same moment, and a green light goes out the instant a pool closes.
- Every pool on your list shows its own small stoplight, so you can see red or green at a glance.
- A pool you add or move now usually gets its answer within seconds, red included when lightning is already near, instead of reading STARTING UP for its whole wait.
- The countdown never shows 00:00 before a pool reopens, and a mark on the timer bar shows the moment it counts from.
- The sky over your pool follows the real sun: golden hour, dusk and the first stars arrive on time, the moon appears only while it is really up, in its true phase, and fog has a look of its own.
- After a closure the storm stays in the sky until the light turns green, or, outside the pool's hours, until the wait is over and no lightning is near.
- Pro: the deck display turns your phone into a full-screen stoplight and countdown for a lifeguard stand, and keeps the screen awake while it is open.
- On a pool's page, VoiceOver says each change of its status as it happens.
- Account and Profile are now two sheets that fit on one screen at the standard text size, and gender reads Male, Female or Prefer not to say.
- Every sheet has a bar at the top with its title and Done, the FAQ is in five tabs, and the privacy policy and terms open inside the app.
- Pull down on your pool list to refresh it, or tap the Connecting or Offline note at the top.
- A new invite appears as a QR code right away, the QR screen turns up the brightness, and adding a pool shows a small map of the place it found.
- On the free plan, one banner stays in place as you move around the app, and a full-screen ad can appear when you go back from a pool to your list: at most once every 15 minutes, never in your first day, and never while lightning is near a pool the app is watching. Pro removes every ad.
What the light means, pool hours and distances are unchanged.
