A calmer reader. While you read, nothing sits on the page; tap once to bring up a quiet row for listening and asking. Listening now lives in one small capsule at the bottom: pause, ask, or swipe up for the full player with speed, accent and a new sleep timer. Ask the book out loud, while listening or just reading: tap the microphone and speak, and the answer is written into the page and read to you. Prefer typing? Tap the keyboard in the capsule, or choose Type a question from the more menu. Chinese answers have a new, warmer voice, and every answer speaks at a more natural pace. Related books open as a floating web, and the bookmark at the top of a book page saves it to Read later in the Me tab.

• Books we are still making now show on the shelves with an hourglass on the cover. Tap I'm waiting too, and we will tell you when the book is out. • Traditional Chinese books have a shelf of their own. • Related books show before you finish a book, and each one says how it relates: it argues back, goes deeper, or puts the idea to work. • Save any book's text to read with no connection. On cellular, you can save the text only and leave the audio for later. • When you are offline, the app now says so plainly instead of saying your trial has ended. • Rate Knowingo from Settings.

• Download a book: tap the download button next to Listen to keep the text and the narration on your phone, then read and listen with no connection. • Your downloads have their own shelf in Me and a page to manage them. • If the network drops while you listen, the player tells you how long it can keep going and carries on when you are back online. • The Books tab now shows shelves by topic, with All books for the full list, and who recommends each book. • Picks say how they relate to a book you read: they challenge it, go deeper, or put it into practice. • Fixes and polish.

Check for updates from Settings. Ask Book conversations are easier to follow. Recent messages stay visible while you type, and a timer appears after you send a question.

Flow Radio: quiet music for reading. Tap the record beside the Books or Papers title to play it, turn the record to scrub, and open the turntable to change channel. In a book, twist two fingers on the page to change track. People in the book: in books with a people list, tap an underlined name while reading to see who they are and where they appear in the parts ahead. Brain burn: see your reading this week in minutes and kilocalories, share it as a card, and climb the burn board, now with Today beside This week. Reader reviews: rate a book when you finish it and read what readers around the world thought. Listen now starts from the paragraph you are reading, and in the dictionary you can pull up to go deeper. Picked for you: choose the topics you want to read about when you sign up, and the Books tab opens with three books chosen for you, each with its reason. The picks follow the books you finish and highlight, and once you have finished a book, one of the three takes you somewhere new. Change your topics anytime in Settings. Narration accents: choose American or British English for books read aloud, in Settings or right in the player. In this sentence: the dictionary now explains what a word or a whole sentence means where you met it, and Looked up words keeps phrases and sentences too. Search results now say why a book is there when its title does not. Your friend now peeks out from behind the quote cards you make. Wish list: tell us which books you want next. Search for any book in any language, vote for the ones other readers want, and we email you the day a book you wished for arrives. Find it beside the gear in the Me tab, or from a library search that comes up empty. A livelier book page: a larger cover you can pull down to enlarge, a cover that settles beside the title as you scroll, a read button that stays within reach, and a cover that swings open into the book.

Search from anywhere on the books tab, tap Books again to jump to the top or start searching, and pick up your recent searches. Find books by award or decade. Long press a book to see why it is worth reading and who it is for. Swipe in from the left edge to close the reader. Words you looked up are kept in Me. New avatars: Marco's friends.

New: look up a word while you read. Tap it for its meaning, then tap Go deeper for a fuller explanation with a picture. Select text to highlight a passage or turn it into a quote card. Book pages now tell you about the author, why the book was written and who recommends it. A new Membership page in Settings shows your plan and lets you switch between monthly and annual. Purchases and Restore purchases are more reliable. Pull down at the top of a book or paper to close it. A calmer sign up, search that finds books by the names people type, and faster opening of books.

New: Audiobooks. Listen to a book's summary read aloud. The paragraph being read stands out on the page, and you can skip by paragraph or set a sleep timer. New: Papers. A landmark research paper, explained in plain words, with its figures redrawn and a link to the original. Search the whole library by title, author or tag. Choose your reading ground and typeface: warm white, sepia, soft green or dark. A redesigned Me tab, and a calmer welcome and sign in. Subscription prices now show clearly, and Subscribe always responds.
