It has functionally, but it’s not super practical.

First off good on them for trying to make raids less of a pain when trying to find group members. HOWEVER I think they need to section off this app for children on one version and adults on another, it’s kinda ridiculous that adults have to speak to other adults as if they were children because the app likes to block curse words. I also would like for a message notification sounds like any other social media app (ahem discord) to let you know when you have a message. Plus there is still a bug that shows you have a forever unread message that refuses to go away (:

Great way to find raids

When you’re looking to grind legendary raids this is so much better than aimlessly driving around. However, the map is the only feature worth using. The flare function is just annoying and not useful unless you live in a very densely populated area. The community feature is clunky and not intuitive. The alternatives (Discord, Reddit, FaceBook, etc) are leaps and bounds better and I don’t see Niantic investing the amount of money needed to make Campfire as good as Discord.

If the they add a PokeGenie type of functionality that would make it way better but that seems to go against their mission of inperson play.

Most of the negative reviews are from people frustrated the app hasn’t been rolled out to everyone yet, not because of issues with the app.

App works well considering the failure of the company

The fact that Niantic would rather make a secondary app to support their one hit wonder than fox the problems present in Go is very telling of the company’s views of players. The app works well and does what it is supposed to, but it only acts as a shiny bandage to cover up the many MANY flaws of the original app. Pokémon go has been dying for years now and instead of making changes to support the remaining player base, Niantic doubles down on their non-remote gameplay idea. Rural players, heck even suburb players are unable to do anything even remotely interesting even with the social app. and if you do happen to live in a city you’re being bombarded with constant messages and flares. It’s a shame to see what this once great game has become.
