A Stunning New Productivity App For Today’s Distraction-Filled World.

What is Portal?
Portal is a productivity app that uses immersive technologies to transform your surroundings into a haven for focus and creativity.

So, it’s just another productivity app, right?
Well, not exactly. It’s a totally new approach to productivity that’s shaped by the latest research in the field of environmental psychology and focuses on the impact our surroundings have on our state of mind, wellbeing and cognitive performance.

Why are our surroundings so important to our productivity?
It’s no secret that our surroundings have a huge impact on how we think and feel - it’s something architects and urban planners have understood for centuries. The surroundings in which we work are no different. Whether we’re working in an office, from home or in a coffee shop our surroundings can either support or hinder our productivity. When they work against us they make focusing and being productive an uphill struggle, leading to longer hours, stress and low morale. However, when we work in surroundings that are attuned to helping us focus and think clearly the effect is profound.

How does Portal work?
Portal uses the latest in immersive technologies, including dynamic (head tracked) spatial audio, smart lighting & retina-quality visuals, to transform your surroundings and provide instant escapes to some of the world’s most peaceful and awe-inspiring locations.

Imagine finding your focus in the midst of a thunderstorm deep in the Amazon Rainforest; discovering your next big breakthrough high in the Himalayas; or getting lost in flow in the remote Highlands of Scotland.

It’s a beautiful and effortless approach to productivity, but also one that’s incredibly effective and backed by a growing mountain of scientific evidence and research.

Who is Portal for?
Ideal for entrepreneurs, digital & creative professionals, students, but really anyone who finds being productive and creative a struggle in today’s distraction-filled world.

Join us on a journey to better surroundings, and experience a productivity app like no other.

What’s New

Version 1.1.0

This release is jam packed with some fantastic new features, a host of useful improvements and an assortment of fixes that will ensure Portal is macOS Sonoma ready - enjoy :)

Dynamic (Head Tracked) Spatial Audio
Thanks to changes available in macOS Sonoma, the magic of Dynamic (head tracked) Spatial Audio can now be experienced on Mac! To get started connect your compatible AirPods or Beats headphones and open Settings > Audio > Spatial Audio > Head Tracked

Fullscreen In-Window Visuals
We've now introduced the ability to play Portal’s visuals fullscreen in-window within the app. Just select your scene, click “Set Surroundings” and then click anywhere on the scene to hide the interface, click again to go back. Now you can enjoy Portal’s visuals integrated into your desktop, in-window or both simultaneously. Pro-tip: in-window support works great when Portal’s in fullscreen mode.

Visual Improvements
For those who prefer not to have Portal’s visuals sync and replace their current wallpaper, you can now control this via Settings > Desktop > Sync Wallpaper

Audio Improvements
- Portal now better supports single channel mono audio output devices.
- We've improved the handling of situations where headphones automatically switch to mono mode when the microphone is in-use.
- The audio settings screen has been streamlined to avoid confusion and include some helpful hints.

Lighting Improvements
- You can now customise the relative brightness of each of your connected smart lighting connections, just open Settings > Lighting > Connections > i > Brightness
- Improved reliability of lighting connection checks.

Keyboard Shortcut Improvements
- Instantly exit the Library and immerse yourself in your current active scene with this new shortcut: option + space

General Improvements
- We've made some caching improvements to speed up loading times at launch and avoid issues where Portal may become unresponsive if the AppStore is unavailable.
- Portal no longer attempts to restore your desktop background on launch if desktop syncing is turned off.
- There is now a downloading message that shows on the desktop and the “Set Surroundings” button whilst video content is loading.
- A progress indicator now shows whenever “Support Info” is requested.
- We’ve made performance improvements to keep Library scrolling buttery smooth.

- Fixes an issue where the headphone status might not refresh in certain circumstances.
- Fixes a typo in "Support Info" (thanks for spotting that one Rachelle!)
- Fixes animation glitches on Sonoma.
- Fixes desktop background sizing on Sonoma.
- Fixes macOS menu bar tinting on Sonoma.
- Fixes a crash that could occur on macOS Sonoma.
- Fixes scrolling flicker that could occur in some collection screens.
- Fixes screen flashing that could occur in some rare situations.

A massive thank you goes out to our beta testers who helped road test the features, improvements and fixes included in this release. If it weren’t for their time, patience and dedication to the cause, this release would not have been possible!

If something has slipped the net or you have any suggestions on future improvements, please don’t hesitate to drop us a line at hello@portal.app - we’d love to hear from you!

Thanks as always,

Andy, Nick, Tim & Stu - Team Portal.

How can an app about sound look this gorgeous? Portal is part immersive audio experience and part travel companion, a way to lose yourself in lush audio environments from all corners of the globe, all through a cool minimalist UI and stunning HD visuals. Focus, study, or snooze to downpours in the Amazon, lapping waves from the lochs of Scotland, whale song from the deep blue waters of Tahiti, or thunder on the Great Plains. Tap a sound and the app transforms into an aesthetically pleasing clock; set a timer to drift off to sleep to winds on the Isle of Skye or wake to a springtime chorus in London. Bonus: Pair compatible AirPods to experience it all in spatial audio.

Incredible for Sleep and Getting Work Done

This app was a game changer for me. I’ve always struggled to go to sleep. I have tried music, sleeping masks, white noise, muscle relaxation, etc. This app was really helpful in transporting me to beautiful, serene locations, putting my mind at ease, and finally allowing me to sink into the depths of unconsciousness at night, It’s soundscapes are beautifully realized visually, with varied, 3D immersive sound. I discovered that some of the soundscapes, especially the barley field and the cloud rainforest, were great aids to helping me write and work without getting distracted. Overall, the app has been a great improvement to my quality of life, which I did not expect initially.

I initially got the free version and was really satisfied with the included features, so I upgraded. I have to say the monetization model was really wonderful, encouraging me to support developers without making me feel like I had to pay for a good experience. Recently the app was updated with tons of new sounds from Scotland and Slovenia. It now includes a subscription model, but for the quantity and quality of content, it seems well worth it, especially because it will help the developers flesh out the app even more. On top of that, they gave everyone who had purchased the app free access to everything, which is incredibly generous! I look forward to great new content in the future. Thank you so much!

Developer Response ,

Hi Quantumlightgamer06, thank you so much for sharing your Portal experience and not least your incredibly kind words. Knowing that Portal has helped improve the quality of your life has put the biggest smiles on our faces - it's a goal that we hoped and dreamed Portal would achieve when we first launched and remains our driving ambition going forward! Thank you for your feedback and for being one of our early paid adopters, without your trust, support and encouragement during those early days it's unlikely we would have been able to grow Portal to where we are to-date. We hope you enjoy escaping to the beautiful Slovenian Alps and the Scottish Highlands, as well as a lifetime of escapes around the world to come! Nick.

Great app! Great developers!!

Update: Everything said before still goes! A year (or more?) later and developers still staying true to their customers! And thankyou for update on new sounds coming, I can not wait!!! And thankyou for taking in customer feedback and adding more variety of sounds💛
Previous review: I just wanted to update review since last app update and say again, it was refreshing to see an app devoloper stay consitent, although they switched to a subscription model they did add a way to pay a 1 time fee, and although its more then the $4, still compared to other apps $30 for lifetime is far more reasonable. But most important thing to note is they allowed the users who previously paid the $4 to buy the app to keep the full version along with all the updates, so when you purchase from this devoloper you can be assured you will keep what you paid for regardless of any future changes in the pricing model, and that is hard thing to come by now a days in the apple world, so thankyou! Suggestions: I also would love to see some more light autumn/forest sounds, maybe without birds (or at least light bird sound in distance and spread out a bit) in future, there are lots of water ones wich are great but more like the barley field one (wich is PERFECTLY done!) I would love!

Updated reply: 👋 Hi Michelle, so lovely to hear from you! Absolutely delighted to hear that the first batch of St Lu portals have gone down so well :)

And we really appreciate your patience with things and sorry about the tease - definitely not our intention. The super exciting news though is the second batch is on its way in the next few weeks along with our new Iceland collection and Spring collection - together these will more than double the number of portals in the Library to over 100 destinations for you to escape to and immerse yourself in. I know I'm biased, but I think they're some of our best yet! So lots to look forward to, which will hopefully make the wait worthwhile. 🤞 you love them when they land.

As always, a massive thank you for all your support and enthusiasm for what we do - means a huge amount to us.

Previous reply: Hi Michelle, thanks again for taking the time to share your feedback - we're incredibly humbled by your kind words and your support - it really does mean a lot to us :)

So pleased that you're a fan of the Devon Spring Barley Field portal - it's one of my favs too! The field happens to be close to where my wife grew up and her parents still live, so it brings back lots of great memories of years gone by.

Great suggestions for future content! I'll be sure to add these to our ideas board and we'll keep them in mind as we plan out our content strategy for the year aheads. Thanks again for your support and enthusiasm - it's infectious and motivates us to continually strive to push the envelope and develop Portal in a way that we can be proud of, Nick.
