This app is one of the best apps I have on my phone, and that’s not because I don’t have apps. This app lets you create all your dnd characters that fit in with all of the official material, as well as your own home-brew content, weather that be classes, races, factions, or rules! it allows you to access all the basic rules, as well as the basic starter campaign: The Lost Mine of Phandelver. This app allows anybody to play dnd, as long as they have an email and an internet connection. Not to mention the online store where you can purchase any dnd book from campaign books to played guides. I have had many a time where I’ve forgotten a rule, monster, or any other piece of general information whilst mid dm-ing for my party and scrambled to this app for answers and information. It’s brilliant, highly recommended!

Love using this in one-shot DnD sessions. Enables me to create a new custom character in seconds…though it’s because I’m familiar with the app that it only takes seconds. I normally use the ‘duplicate character’ function for easy character modification, which in essence, is a quicker way to create new characters that are vaguely similar to the original.It will take everyone new to this app, ~1 hour, to create their first character, based on experience and trying to learn everything needed for character creation. Using a character in a DnD game, with digital dice, felt easy once I was familiar with the app but not initially intuitive unless you randomly press buttons and realise what those buttons do when trying to roll dice.

I love the character sheets in this app - it’s all set up and clickable, and the reference for an ability is built in with the library of content. I also use this when I’m running an adventure to keep the campaign and sourcebooks available and ready. It’s all integrated nicely. I would like more support for encounters inside campaigns. They are a bit disconnected and not produced automatically from the published adventures. This would be a good enhancement.

This app is very much a combat tracker at the moment. You can track HP, used spell slots (but no spell descriptions), rests, per-rest abilities, and conditions, but not much else. You can’t level up or un/equip weapons or armour, nor can you change your inventory, or view notes or character description. Also, no in-app dice roller.It does have an in-app browser that takes you to your character sheet so you can make adjustments there. Not, of course, the point of an app, but DDB has been a reliable, if slow, developer and I’m confident all these features will be added over the coming months.The iPad app uses the mobile (phone) layout instead of the desktop web layout. I guess this is understandable. The extra screen real estate makes it easier to use than on the phone but a dedicated iPad app would have been nice. (I doubt it’s worth the developer resources, however.)If you’re new to D&D Beyond you should go check out the website And start there.
