AvPlan EFB – Plan faster, fly sooner
more Excellent software, well-designed interface, outstanding support and trouble-shooting from the developers. As a student pilot (passed RPL and flying locally, almost ready for PPL), I have found this app extremely useful for understanding the "whole picture" - airspace structure, aerodrome types, flight planning, wind correction, weight & balance, fuel planning, notams, communication, AIRACs, etc etc. You can easily explore "what if" scenarios. The flight plan page, which automatically re-calculates wind corrections and flight times based on forecast weather, is a great way to develop intuition about the influence of weather. It's also instructive to run the app when you're an airline passenger. I probably can't use avplan efb in the actual flight test because of the need to demonstrate skills with charts and whiz wheel, but it is a great learning tool. For flying as a qualified pilot, this efb is superb.

I’ve used ForeFlight for several years, supplied by an employer, and have recently spent time using Garmin Pilot because my aircraft has a full Garmin avionics suite.Quite frankly, I’m surprised at how poorly both of these highly regarded US-based EFBs stack up against AvPlan when it comes to actually operating an aircraft in Australia.ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot may be excellent products for the US market, but for Australian flying they feel like square pegs in round holes. The Australian charts, weather, airspace information, briefing functionality and overall integration simply don’t come close to what AvPlan provides.Having experienced all three, AvPlan is streets ahead for Australian operations. It feels like it was designed by people who actually understand the realities of flying in Australia, rather than being a US product adapted for the Australian market.I’m also disappointed that OzRunways is now owned by foreign investors. That leaves AvPlan as, in my view, the obvious choice for Australian pilots who want an EFB genuinely tailored to Australian conditions. After using ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot, I wouldn’t consider either of them a serious alternative to AvPlan for Australian GA operations.

A couple of frustrations here and there, but the team is very responsive and proactive with resolving. Overall, I would say this app saves operators a lot of money in fuel as finding the optimal flight level is made so easy. When the type data is set up correctly, you can expect flight times accurate to the minute and ground speed to within a couple of knots. Remember when weather and notams included several gps waypoints as reference? Well, not it just shows you where they are. Brilliant. Some of the aerodromes shown on the maps have been dis-established and aren’t there anymore. Wouldnt want to head for one of those in the event of an engine failure.

Definite 5 star rating. Like anything new, once you get use to using the many fantastic features it is a fantastic App. Cockpit workload is greatly reduced and also, it makes flight planning a breeze. I have been really impressed with the post purchase support from the Avsoft team, emails are answered promptly and the right solution is always provided. There are many great features contained in Avplan however, a particular favourite of mine is the Geo (GPS) referenced (subscription fee applies, but worth it) aerodrome charts (and approach plates). This makes it a lot easier to confidently know exactly which taxiway you are on at a large airport I.e YSBK Thanks Avsoft!
