Does the job
This does the job if you need something to reply from and get notifications on. It seems to be a bit useless when there's a group chat and you haven't opened the app in a while as it tries to catch up. Also don't expect it to funciton the same way as the iphone/ipad versions as there's no custom reactions so the consistency of experience isn't what I would expect. Aside from that, it's usable and a slightly better alternative than having a facebook browser window open just for messenger.
Autocorrect function unavailable and no share-menu option
It's really disappointing that the autocorrect function is unavailable for this app. Simple things like auto-adding capitalisation and correcting minor mistakes really detract from the fluid typing experience found in many other apps. It also seems to highlight most of the words that are correctly spelled as incorrect - not sure why that is. I've checked my keyboard settings in system preferences to make sure I wasn't going insane and it's definitely a localised issue with Messenger.
Additionally, when hitting the "share" icon on a website, Messenger does not appear. It's not even an option to include to the share-menu set from system preferences. This was the sole reason I downloaded the standalone app - at this point, there is no difference between what's standalone vs on their website (except for the fact that the standalone app takes up space on your computer memory).
This app is good
In general, this app actually functions quite well and it’s convenient to have it on the desktop. However, it lacks the ability to increase text size. This feature would be incredibly helpful as I use this app regularly and as a vision ipaired person, I find the standard text size too small so I need to use the inbuilt zoom function under accessability but normally I would not require this if I have the ability to increase text size witin the app.
