Researchers at Monash University have developed the low FODMAP diet and a corresponding app to assist in the management of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The Monash University FODMAP diet works by swapping foods high in fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs), with low FODMAP alternatives. Around 75% of people with IBS experience symptom relief on a low FODMAP diet.
The app comes directly from the research team at Monash and includes the following:
- General information about the FODMAP diet and IBS.
- Easy to understand tutorials to guide you through the app and the 3-Step FODMAP diet.
- A Food Guide detailing the FODMAP content for hundreds of foods using a simple 'traffic light system'.
- A list of branded products that have been certified by Monash as low FODMAP.
- A collection of over 70 nutritious, low FODMAP recipes.
- Functions that allow you to create your own shopping list and add notes to individual foods
- A Diary that enables you to record food eaten, IBS symptoms, bowel habits and stress levels. The Diary will also guide you through step 2 of the diet - FODMAP reintroduction.
- The ability to adjust units of measurement (metric or imperial) and activate colour blindness assistance.

I feel confident using this app that the information I’m getting is correct knowing it came directly from the place that discovered the information.
Some suggested improvements for user ability:
- have a way to filter by FODMAP
E.g if I went to reintroduce sorbitol give me a way I can search for foods with that FODMAP specifically so I can try them out rather than having to scroll through and click into each food item
- more information on each food intolerance
E.g 60% of people with fructose intolerance also have an intolerance to fructans (made up statistic)
Just to help us figure out which FODMAP to try and reintroduce first or last OR have that suggested somewhere in the app
- favourites is great - also having a button to click to put a certain food in a “bad” pile would be amazing as I’m OCD and love putting things into neat lists
- online support channel - where those of us who have bought the app can connect on a social channel to discuss strategies and ideas and share information we’ve found
- list of FODMAP approved doctors or dietitions. Easy way to streamline the course available on the website and the medical proffessionals who have completed it so it’s easier for us to find.

Amazing app - life changing information
This app provides guidance around what foods and quantities are ‘safe’ for people with gastrointestinal issues such as IBS or even just pain. I have now been using this app for over a year. I it initial it can take time to adjust your diet and understand what is safe. Once you get a grasp of it the app is invaluable. I use it when cooking, grocery shopping and to advise others. I have gone from being in constant pain with a low quality of life to being active, running 6 kms and returning to work. I could not have achieved any of this without the support this app provides.
The app is constantly updated with results from new tests. There are even recipes you can try.
So beware this app can be life changing. I highly recommend purchasing the app and giving it a go. It is worth every cent you pay and more! I hope you get a result as amazing as mine!

Good info, BAD app! Not worth $$$
The information provided in the app is really invaluable, no denying it. But the way it is presented is inconsistent, and there’s really glaringly obvious omissions that border on suspicious. Like ‘commercial pressure has been applied to leave things out’ suspicious.
Common fibre supplement psyllium husk is not included, yet there are conflicting reports on the Internet as to whether it does or doesn’t include FODMAPs - I suspect the makers of Metamucil have something to do with this.
I’m also learning that Monash Uni are quite secretive about which brands they are testing to come up with the numbers, which is a mixed blessing, I basically just avoid processed foods altogether which is great for my health but not for convenience.
I also note reading the reviews that really smart feature requests remain un-implemented after more than two years. And the app is buggy af. I have to often close it and reopen for the search to show something new instead of the last thing I searched, despite putting in new search terms. OH! And the ‘rate this app’ link is conveniently not working 🤨I came here via the App Store to write this and I’m less than impressed with that, it’s just arrogant an/or sloppy, really. The whole app is sloppy.
I’ll be checking out some of the free apps, I wish I’d done that first. I was trusting in Monash Uni given they’re the ones behind the research, and I feel a bit let down. I really wonder if this was money well spent.

We follow a strict protocol for foods tested for our app which you can read more about here: https://www.monashfodmap.com/blog/fodmap-testing/. In brief, the FODMAP results of packaged products are based on sampling and testing 3 different brands. We do not disclose brand names to maintain their privacy; we also prefer patients to focus on the common characteristics / ingredients of a packaged product to determine whether that particular food is suitable to consume at different stages in their FODMAP journey.
Branded products that are named in the app are certified under our low FODMAP certification program. These brands have approached us to have specific products tested and endorsed as Monash certified. You can read more about our program at our website.
In regards to psyllium husk, we have attempted to test this fibre within our lab and at an external lab without success. The water holding properties of psyllium has made testing technically challenging for both labs. We will be writing a blog on this topic soon, so stay tuned!

In terms of free apps/food lists available online, these are often based on outdated information or guesswork and not on laboratory analysis of foods.
