Description

Protect yourself when the UV is at damaging levels with the SunSmart Global UV app.

Powered by world leading health, radiation and weather organisations, the app provides worldwide UV levels and clear guidance as to when sun protection is and is not required.

Travelling and spending time outdoors is one of life’s great joys. Knowing when sun protection is recommended wherever you are in the world gives you confidence to enjoy the sun safely, minimizing the risk of skin damage which can lead to cancer.

The SunSmart Global UV app takes the guesswork out of being safe in the sun with daily sun protection times sent to your phone along with simple advice for protecting your skin.

***What are sun protection times?***
Sun protection times are linked to the UV Index and are advised when the UV is forecast to be 3 and above. This is consistent with the WHO UV Index guidance and has been determined as the level at which damage to the skin is likely to occur more quickly.

The app will advise you that sun protection is required during specific times when the UV is forecast to be 3 and above so that you can adequately protect your skin.

***How is it different to other UV apps?***
The UV app has the backing of world-leading health and meteorological organisations making it a trusted and reliable source of advice.

Unlike other apps, the SunSmart Global UV app is designed to simply inform users when sun protection is required and when it is not.

***What are the key features?***
- Daily UV levels for the local area including sun protection times
- 5-day forecast including UV and weather forecast
- Access to the forecast UV and sun protection times anywhere in the world

Mostly solid, but previous app still better at the basics

Pretty much parroting what others have said, but it’s great the app has gone global now, and overall the new UI looks great. However, I fully agree that the live UV reading should be much more prominent, as the way the old app displays the essential numbers is much better. I did just notice a slight disagreement between each app in terms of the time sun protection is required too (9:30 AM vs 9:40 AM), despite the live UV and forecast UV otherwise matching.
Alerts also seem to be broken for me. I’ve turned on alerts for “when sun protection is required” as well as at a custom time on set weekdays. This morning, I received three alerts, all of which came through well before the live or forecast UV reached 3, and it isn’t even a day I’ve selected to receive notifications on.
Really hope these things can be improved, as this is otherwise an app that every Aussie should have on their phone.

Make the actual UV readings bigger and legible!!

Nice to see the app go global but for heavens sake the UV numbers are tiny, and low contrast so on a phone extremely hard to read especially outside in the sun or for older people. Very poor useability and far too much wasted space on the screen. For anyone with more than a passing interest in their exposure the actual reading values are a must. The “use protection” graphic arc dominates but is a pretty dumb indicator as weather conditions change across the day and it bever changes on a day regardless of the weather. Older app far more useable.

Inaccurate UV data & Change to overall data sources

Hi, I have installed this App being the new version to your original SunSmart App and I find it is a poor substitute for your original SunSmart App. The new App, version 1.4.1, does not provide accurate UV data. I’m located in QLD and as an example, at the time of writing this feedback your original App confirms the current UV is 7 however on the new App it states the current UV is 4.2. This is a dramatic difference and for some individuals could mean the difference between wearing sunscreen and sun protection and not. My other concern is where the weather data is being sourced from on the App. The data provided on this App is being sourced from ECMFW, World Meteorological Organisation and Arpansa. As a comparison, on the original App, version 3.0.13, the data is local to Australia, being sourced from bureau of meteorology and Australian radiation protection and nuclear safety agency.

Developer Response ,

Hello and thank you for downloading the app. Could you please email sunsmart.enquiries@cancervic.org.au your location, device and the specific issue you are experiencing so we can investigate with our technical team. The weather source is similar between the old and new app, both Australian sources being the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA). Thank you.
