It is disappointing that the app will not work without granting permission to read and write all health data. It’s not clear why the app needs write access, but it will refuse to open if it isn’t given it. It would be much better if you could select what the app is allowed to view, and then the app will work with whatever data it has been given, rather than an all or nothing approach.

Edit: thanks for the response. I understand Apple can only let you show the pop up once asking for permissions, but most apps get around this by not allowing you to do an action you haven’t allowed permission for. So in this case, not allowing you to start a workout recording and instead have a link to privacy tab in settings explaining that the app needs write access. This is how every other app I have installed deals with privacy permissions, rather than not opening without all permissions checked. As an example, Instagram app works fine without camera permission, unless you try and take a photo in which case it is a splash screen with a link to privacy in settings.

Developer Response ,

All the Rings needs to ask for write permissions due to the way Apple has structured the permission system. The app can only ask for a permission once. And since the app can track workouts, it needs to be able to write the results of those workouts to the system's health database. If I was to ask just for read permissions, I could never then ask for write permissions later when you try to track a workout.

Secondly, if I allow you to use the app with only read permission, 'because you never want to track a workout', but then you later decide to track a workout anyway, you'll lose the results. I'd rather have someone give me a 3 star review than allow someone to lose data.

Requires far too many permissions

I want to see my activity metrics on my watch, I don’t want this app to write to my Apple health data, but until I accepted all the writing permissions the app didn’t work. Then the complications don’t update often enough (not the app’s fault, due to apple’s restrictions) so I’ve uninstalled it. Wouldn’t recommend this to anyone who is concerned about privacy.

Edit: Thanks for the response Dave. Once I got the “you didn’t grant permissions” message, your one chance to ask was already over. So at that point you gain nothing by forcing me to grant more permissions now. I don’t think the “apps can only request permissions once” argument holds any water as to why you demand every permission is granted. FYI, I granted them, then ungranted them and the app worked.

Developer Response ,

Hi. Dave the developer of All the Rings here. Sorry that the app has to ask for those permissions up front. The app needs write permission just for tracking your workout on a watch. It doesn't write anything to your health database that isn't generated by the device itself. If you never track a workout in All the Rings, it won't write anything. You can even go into the Health App and view exactly what was saved, and you can delete that data anytime if you so choose. I hope that helps. Please reach out to me anytime if you have any other questions.
