Fantastic , ignore the silly reviews

App is the online counterpart to the curve card. You can add Visa or Master cards to it to use as the underlying source of funds for the Curve card. App shows almost all transactions instantly and has a rewind feature incase you want to change the underlying card for a previously made transaction. If you were invited to the closed beta for Amex cards then those work too, essentially letting you use your Amex in places that don’t usually accept it. Those of us who were early adopters still have the beta curve rewards with cash back options on places such as Marriott, though I hear anyone who applies now will only have an introductory cashback period with select retailers.

Ignore those who are saying that the app is a scam that takes your money. These people do not seem to understand what a pre authorisation charge is. When you add a new card it will hold £1 or £2 for a short time and release this back to you a few days later at most. It will do this to each new card you attach and is common practice.

Some great features

Generally I think this is a great concept only needing one card, although I generally use applepay which removes the need for me to carry any cards with me. The feature that I find the most useful is the ‘Go back in time’ which allows you to swap transactions on to a different card. The only reason that I gave 4 stars is that I have had 2 occasions in a short space of time where a transaction has been charged twice on my account because the terminal told me it had declined or I needed to insert the card even though it had already debited my account. Customer service takes about 2 days to get back to you and the response was that it would normally be refunded back within 10 working days. On these occasions they were small amounts, however if they were larger amounts that would cause me major concern. So all in all it’s useful but at times unreliable.

Check payments being applied correctly and have alternate ready when travelling

I used Curve happily for a few months albeit I found it wasn’t accepted in some countries abroad -most recently in Cape Verde in Dec at all and in quite a few places in Norway in Jan - so you do still need to carry the underlying cards when travelling. I had been waiting for it to support Amex which is now not going to happen.

My problem came after some kind of update to the software in Jan which initially locked me out of the app (no problem I thought until sorted as had wallet on MasterCard which i use) - only to find out that with the patch to the software Curve itself had switched payment to use my bank Visa. Most of Jan/Feb taken incorrectly direct from bank whilst i was trying to remember to sort out Curve login. After several weeks of trying to resolve and complain with Curve I gave up.

My advice would be if using and on a tight budget- check daily that payments continue to be applied to correct card (mine did until they updated software). AND big one - bring an alternate payment method when travelling as Curve alone would have left us stranded.

The issues regarding your selected card being changed automatically in the app can sometimes occur if a manual change did not go through successfully due to poor mobile/wifi connection or a communication error with our server.
