Excellent language teaching

Because the learning is auditory, it forces you to learn actively. Instead of learning things because they are explained to you, you learn them by intuiting the patterns from what you experience. I have learnt a lot of French in a month, and my accent is way better than when I struggled through it at school. I’ve found it really exciting and enjoyable. I developed a confidence that the Pimsleur system would teach me what I need when I need it, so I relax and enjoy the lessons instead of worrying about remembering everything or doing it perfectly. Having previously used Pimsleur on library audio recording alone, I have to say that the app’s extra written materials are a great addition and help link you into the written language as well as allow you to discover grammatical distinctions which aren’t audible. Most days I did the lesson on a morning walk, the written materials later on, and sometimes I would repeat the lesson. Walking really helped me learn effectively. Personally I don’t think it’s safe to use when driving because it takes too much concentration to leave you able to drive safely/optimally. Overall, very efficient and effective system, a world away from school learning, focuses on you getting a good grasp of the 20% of the language that is used 80% of the time and thus having the best functional fluency you can for the time you’ve put in. Recommended.

I want to learn German because my wife speaks German and two of my cousins and their families live in German speaking countries. There are three genders, for instance, and the verbs seem to always go on the end of any sentence. If the other language courses are anywhere near as good then this is a must buy: it’s swift and effective – but it can get a little repetitive.

I have used the Pimsleur method before (old school, CD’s & mp3 files) so was hesitant with the monthly subscription at first but the app really raises the game from just the audio lessons. There’s a lot of really useful extra content that helps scaffolding and reinforce learning. For example I find the flash cards very handy to help with specific words that I’m struggling with. Likewise the custom vocabulary dictionary is good for helping save words and referencing later. I really like how you can tap to see the topics and the number of words / phrases in each level. It’s quite satisfying to see for example, that you’ve completed 11/16 phrases in the travel category or whatever. There’s a bunch of features I haven’t used yet like ‘challenge’, adding the Pimsleur Certificate for completing the 30 lesson course is a nice little touch as well. A heads up though that in all likelihood you won’t be progressing at the rate of one lesson a day, I have to run each lesson 3x before I’m confident to move on.

I started using the app just yesterday to learn Tagalog since I plan to visit the Philippines and it has blown me away. Each and every word is taught how to be pronounced and it’s repeated multiple times during a lesson so it really does stick in your head and allows you to be able to answer questions just after the first lesson. The flash cards, mix & match, reading, speaking and speed round features are so very useful aswell, they help you cement everything you have learnt in the lesson. The lessons itself are only 30 minutes long which I think is perfect, it’s short enough that you can have your lesson before work in the mornings or just before bed at night. Short, concise and to the point. I can’t even explain how much I love this app. Thank you PimSleur !!
