I don’t usually leave reviews, but this app deserves five stars! I have been using it every single day for over a year, and have felt my mastery of Chinese increasingly steadily and rapidly during that time. The app is colourful and attractive, intuitive and easy to use, and structured in a way that is logical and satisfying. In my quite extensive experience of language study (including the University of Oxford) and self-study, it is one of the best self-study resources out there, since it offers you a stable path to Chinese fluency and you can trust in it to guide you up the HSK levels in speaking, listening and reading - whether or not you wish to take the exams - without wondering whether you’re missing anything. Tackling a language like Chinese alone requires precisely the sort of motivational milestones that this app provides. It was also recently further improved by the audio and translation now being provided for every question. The Chinese it teaches is not the stilted, overly formal stuff of textbooks - it has allowed me to have actual conversations of increasing sophistication with native speakers of Chinese. 5 stars, highly recommended!

Update, Oct 2023. The AI add on is absolutely amazing. At the end of each course module there’s now a virtual ai teacher with an incredibly realistic voice that questions you about your learnt topic to further test you. There’s also an ai conversation where you can have conversations with the ai using your voice on various topics. This has been done before in a few other apps, but the fact that an ai now adds to existing course topics just makes this a cut above all the rest. Refreshingly different from Duolingo, this app is a very well put together, comprehensive course. A nice way to know your progress as you go through the HSK sets, yet keeping it interesting with animated conversations. It teaches you vocabulary in context by reusing words in different scenarios as opposed to some other apps that just makes you memorise words without fully understanding the usage in context. It has frequent recaps and presents you with previous mistakes. Each lesson reinforces the previous, which a lot of other apps don’t do. Other apps tend to give you individual lessons, forgetting about previous ones and not building or reinforcing what you’ve learnt… but this one solves that problem. Animations and illustrations are crisp and well done. Most voices are by real humans. There are some sentences narrative by a computer synthesised voice, but even that is very good. The voice recognition is also pretty accurate. It took me a little while to understand the structure and how to progress through the course… at first I didn’t understand how to move through the course it looked like it kept giving me the same lesson - but then the penny dropped, and it all became clear. I bought a lifetime subscription. I haven’t used the language exchange feature as I use another for that which I’m happy with. I’m not sure if the language exchange is their primary focus, it’s just a nice-have. I can’t recommend this app enough.

Blows other chinese apps out of the water

Man I really wished i discovered this app much sooner. The chao AI features are amazing and really forces you to speak and use what is being used in the lesson and I can better learn and internalise what is being taught. Some minor flaws/mistakes with some of the content and wish there was an easier way to report specific mistakes in some lessons.Other than this minor issue, this is one of the best chinese apps on the market and really enjoying the structured visual approach to learning chinese

Good app with need for improvement

The app itself is very impressive in terms of the amount of content available and the AI features are very handy in terms of providing practice opportunities and being able to ask additional clarification questions regarding grammar. I would like to see:1) Better review feature: Currently the app doesn’t trigger the user to review and the review feature lacks customisation options (e.g. I want to practice recognising characters but I cannot disable the pronunciation of the characters being read out upon being shown, which defeats the purpose).2) The app often feels like a beta version which isn’t really acceptable given the high price point, e.g. often there are lags in loading screens and when you tap continue twice you accidentally skip a screen; no landscape mode on iPad supported; constantly need to re-login with Apple ID every time I open the app
