A must for any parent with device addicts children.

A great app that I can’t recommend enough for parents with device addicted children, it helps me control the time spent and context browsed on my son’s electronic devices, teaching him responsible time management habits, also delivering me a live feed of time spent and a list of websites/ apps visited, you can install this on multiple devices, you can use the app to reward or punish behaviour patterns, when we first installed this software we had to endure the expected insults and guilt tripping, such as “your just controlling me” and “I am going to delete the app” (which thankfully the programmers foresaw) but within a week or so he came to accept the new restrictions and has since emerged from his computer-trance and has started engaging in more traditional activities such as building Lego and playing out doors with friends etc, again I can’t recommend this app enough.

Avoid this if you value your child’s mental health

This should be removed from the App Store. It is completely unreliable, even if you pay the subscription. It’s problem is technical, but it comes down to its VPN service being very unreliable. Since it depends on this for its “management” of the device, you cannot simply switch it off. You have to remove the VPN profile from your child’s device in order for normal network connections to resume. This is bad enough, but add in the non-existent customer service and you know you have been hoodwinked for the price of the subscription. The result of the service failing is that the device it is supposed to be protecting can become as useful as a brick. Qustodio had locked out the handset as it should have done at bedtime, but then refused to let it back on when restrictions were lifted. Nothing I could do through the Parents App or the web would bring it back leaving the phone next to useless, and our child extremely upset. The only “fix” was to uninstall the VPN profile on our child’s handset, and that can only be done with your hands on the device. Support have still not bothered to respond, so I have dumped the app and recommended to all parents, with whom I have contact, to do the same. No child should be brought to tears through an app’s inability to work properly. This is a poorly written app, reliant on a very unreliable service that neither Apple nor users have any control over. If you are putting yourself forward as a “secure” service for our most vulnerable and valuable people (yes, our children), then do not go near this thing with a barge pole.

Doesn’t really do the job

At first, the app seems to tick all boxes: time management, locks automatically when time is up, location and usage tracking … basically everything parents ask from such an app. After reading reviews and doing a quick benchmark, I decided to go with this app and quickly moved to the Premium feature, what’s a few dozen € when you can get peace of mind …But I forgot that, the reason why I needed such an app was because my kid was getting really creative in finding was to get more screen time. It only took them a couple of days to realise they can bypass time allowance by simply going on flight mode or turning off 4G. I spoke to the Qustodio team who claims that they can’t do anything about it (played the privacy card) but what’s the point of having an app installed on the kid’s device when it can’t communicate with the phone settings which is able to track screen time? This needs to be fixed ASAP, as the very purpose of the app is made obsolete. I got offered to get my money back, but what I really need is this to be fixed.

Unexplained inoperability

I purchased the Family premium option and I confess it has been a nightmare. The App alternates between blocking everything one day (forcing me to switch off the restrictions so that my kid can attend online school) and then blocking nothing the next day (of course after turning the restrictions back on again and restarting the PC). I ‘repair’ the app almost every day but the problem returns almost immediately. The online help suggested that I insert a .exe file to monitor the problem, but it was not possible to insert that file. Since then I have heard nothing from them. The app repeatedly tells me that my son has registered no activity despite me knowing that he has. The strange thing is that the app seems to function ok on my daughter’s laptop. The only good thing that has emerged from this is that I had so many conversations with my son about it - and he got so fed up with it all too - that we ended up having grown-up conversations about it and he now times himself and self-censors. So in a way a positive outcome. I will uninstall the app and find something else, whether they give me my money back or not.
