I’ve had this app for about 4/5 months now and it’s great - audio quality is so much better than other apps, it’s easy to use - I love organising my ideas into Mixtapes for easier access and also love the recent playback functionality where I can shuffle all my tracks I had some difficulty porting some files over when recently upgrading my phone so reached out to their support who where just brilliant - solved my problem the same day and were so supportive.Can’t recommend this app enough if you’re a musician wanting some way of recording and cataloging your music it’s an absolute no brainer - plus they regularly update functionality based on customer feedback.

I rarely take time to review apps, but this is stunning. Genuinely has improved my musical output immensely, as such a big part of what held me back in my production was the fear of hitting record, but for some reason this app just invites you to commit to tape in a way that printing to a daw does not. Super handy for collecting foley whilst out and about and then reincorporating that into your projects. I use this with the teenage engineering opxy which allows you to record out directly over USB, I genuinely adore it. All I would add are some basic audio editing functions, eg to trim track length or normalise levels, but aside from that.. flawless for the dawless.

Wish design was a bit more streamlined

I have tried this app for a while based on a Tape Notes podcast recommendation but will be going back to voice memos for one simple reason. It sounds super trivial, but I just wish the record and tapes pages were combined like they are in voice memos. I really don’t like how I have to record something, then go to a separate page to edit/change file name etc, then go to another page to record again. It’s just a bunch of unnecessary button presses. Why can’t I just record on the list page like voice memos? Also why can’t you replace audio like you can in voice memos? Honestly I think most other things about this app are better than voice memos, and if these two things were addressed I’d use it, but it’s just so annoying having to flip back and forth between the record and tapes pages constantly!!!

Thanks for the honest feedback. We actually considered a design with a combined record and listen page several times as we developed Tape It and are still thinking about maybe implementing it the way you describe. It has a few other downsides, but I fully understand that the tradeoff we chose may not have been the best tradeoff for you. For now, in the short term, we’re thinking about making it easier to directly name recordings that you made right after you made them on the record screen. That should solve most of the pain points you mention if I understand you correctly.
Second Time Lucky
Attempted tape it user
Gave the app another go after initially being unable to download/access due to a server outage on the part of the developer. Lay out and fucntionality are well thought through and relatively intuitive. Much easier to organise and quickly visual assess files as compared to Apple's voice notes app. The game changer is the ability to record in stereo given Tape It engages both of the phone's mics, huge difference in sound quality. The only 2 features I would have expected that aren't present 1) you can't zoom in on waveforms for more detailed marker placement 2) you can't crop tapes. Price seems fair for what you get if you'll actually integrate it to your workflow.
A lot of improvements on the audio settings:
- Monitor your input audio while recording on wired connections (on Bluetooth, the latency is too high for that to make sense)
- Previously, when using a Bluetooth headset, Tape It would always use the built-in iPhone mics because they sound better. That's still the default, but you can now explicitly choose to use your headset's mics instead
- Choose the sample rate for USB audio interfaces
This update also fixes a bug that would prevent synchronization in an edge case.
