Have you ever tried to spend a voucher that you have “eaten out so hard” to earn? OpenTable provides you with the list of restaurants in the UK (not even broken down by city) where you CANNOT spend the vouchers. Instead of providing you with the list of WHERE you can. Apparently there are 4000 places where you can, but you can’t know which ones they are (also because some of the names that are not in their exclusion list, actually do not accept the voucher - such as Arabica Borough Market, London). This makes me think that this is intentional: OpenTable does not want you to spend their money (which they’d probably have to give back to the restaurant), hence they make the most user-unfriendly way of spending the voucher. I cannot believe that with the skills they have (look how magnificent their app is) - they cannot provide a way for a search by name and location of the restaurants which accept the vouchers. I have got 35 pounds to spend, time is passing and I cannot find a restaurant which accepts it. Not nice.——-Asked to review the app today (months after my review here above - that is end June 2022) I cannot change it as my voucher has expired. In addition, I have found out that the app does not find “Chinese cuisine” in the section when you scroll down to add options. Really? There are the Italian, the French, the Japanese, the Mediterranean but not the Chinese. How come? Aren’t there enough Chinese restaurants in London to justify that?

Unscrupulous restaurants use this app to charge you if you cannot attend a meal for reasons such as illness or covid symptoms. At a time to be safe for you and others around you this is disgusting . I used this app to make a booking using my credit card as a holding payment and when I tried to cancel my booking because my son was ill with covid symptoms was told by the restaurant that this was an OpenTable issue and I would be charged £50 . The app clearly told me to call the restaurant which I did before the booking time . The restaurant said that it was down to OpenTable to resolve the cancellation. I cancelled before the meal and the restaurant has marked me as a no show .The restaurant clearly knew that they would make money out of this app by telling me that I would incur the charge .They said ‘sir your booking is with OpenTable speak to them’. At no time did they say you have failed to comply with our booking requirements and will incur a charge . The restaurant knew full well of this loophole to catch customers . In a time such as now with covid this behaviour of providers charging shouldn’t be allowed . Unsurprisingly No phone number to discuss with OpenTable - just a chat room that binned me off after waiting for ages . Be warned about downloading this app .

Have been using this app and service since they were Toptable years ago. Have always been impressed with them. Things that have gone wrong with any bookings in the past have usually been at the fault of the restaurant, ie. not checking their notifications properly or not registering that you visited them. But thankfully those problems have been rare. Sadly there aren’t as many restaurants with special offers as there used to be, but it’s still worth using the app as the points you receive really add up and you can eventually convert them into a large voucher cheque to pay for/towards a meal. There’s always a good to excellent selection of restaurants to choose from, especially in the big cities. Useful reading the users reviews also, which tend to prove to be a bit more genuine than say Tripadvisor reviews. I definitely can recommend Opentable.
