I stumbled across the NYT crossword app when Wordle went there - living in the UK, it wasn’t an obvious place for me to look. But I found the daily and mini crosswords to be just what I like - often challenging but not impossible, entertaining and informative (when I have to research to find the answers). I like the themes, and the fact that sometimes numbers and rebuses unexpectedly feature in the answers. I also enjoy the Acrostic puzzles though I find them harder. My interest in language means that I enjoy exploring the (many!) differences between British and American English, though I suspect this would be a deterrent for many Brits. Well worth the £25 annual subscription cost for me!
Favourite app became a let down
spenceosaur
I used this app daily and have enjoyed paying for it and completing the archives but in the last few months the app has stopped working for me. Every time I try to complete the mini or midi crosswords the app shuts down randomly and will cause any apps I have in the background to need a refresh or to be redownloaded. This means getting the crosswords done very difficult as the app shuts down spontaneously multiple times and I have given up trying to use it and ended my subscription. I’ve tried going on the manufacturer’s website to discuss the fault but they only offer a chat service for ET time American users, I’ve tried reporting a problem through the App Store but there’s no option for a faulty app. I’ve tried re-downloading it and starting my phone and I’ve cleared my cache multiple times and done all the things the internet advised. The app not my phone needs an update so I don’t understand why the app isn’t working correctly for me. I’m deeply saddened by it as the app became an important part of my daily routine and now it’s gone.
Excellent… if you’re American. Good if you’re English
Millenwagon
I know this is an American app so obviously it’s going to be tailored towards Americans, but if you’re British like myself, you might find a lot of the answers to be nonsensical. I really like the connections game, but it’s so inconsistent. Sometimes the “connections” are so absurd that only a mind reader would be able to make sense of it. It should be called “what am I thinking?”. Sometimes there are words that are clearly linked, but they don’t belong together and you waste chances. The crosswords can also be tricky due to the American nature of the app, but other than that it’s still great.
Great app, shame about the iPad version
Simon Whitaker
I have a weird admiration for just how profoundly broken this app is on iPad. To paraphrase Dolly Parton, you have to be a great developer to break an app this profoundly. It’s absolutely fine running full screen, but as soon as you resize the app, all hell breaks loose. The font size doesn’t adapt! The window sometimes loses its bottom edge! If you try to escape the nightmare by tapping the green “maximise” button, it just changes shape to another, non-full screen size. Getting the app back to full screen requires skill, patience and sometimes a blood sacrifice. Hats off to the folks at NYT, I don’t know how they’ve pulled this off but I’ll be sad when they finally fix it. (Narrator’s voice: he won’t be sad.)
This version contains a limited time offer: Annual Games subscribers can now get 6 months of free language lessons with Super Duolingo.
