I use bike map on road with a subscription. It works well on road but there are a few issues that make it hard to use and potentially dangerous off road. I have discussed these with the support team who acknowledged the problems but haven’t committed to fixing. They told me that the problem was ‘probably caused by use off road’. Indeed - but the app description advertises that it can plan the perfect route for all types of bike - including mountain biking. Problems are: 1. When navigating off road, the route is changed unpredictably from the one that was drawn of previewed on the phone. It tries to route back to roads, resulting in very confused routes. It is dangerous to follow an unplanned route off-road. 2. When using preview to follow a route (out of navigation mode) the zoom frequently resets, meaning that this is not a practical alternative 3. Only the default map can be downloaded. Even with a subscription, the open cycle map cannot be downloaded for offline use. This is a shame because open cycle map shows contours.

Hi Colin, thanks for your review and sorry you weren't happy with Bikemap. We appreciate the honest feedback and are hoping to improve our off-road biking capabilities asap. We are still a growing start up so big changes can take time but I assure you we are working hard to improve the app. Our support team didn't decline to consider fixing it, but rather your feedback was noted (along with all user feedback we get) and will be considered by the relevant decision makers when deciding how to improve the app. Thank you & happy cycling! 💙🚲
Some good points but needs improving
Foofighterfan66
I have used this for a few days since buying a bike for the first time in quite a while and wanted something to ensure I was able to get out on my bike and not get lost. Some really good points are you can import routes from other sites and even using an iPad you can easily create routes. However the planner will sometimes take you on a circuitous route, taking you on a parallel road when there is no reason for this. The free version allows sat nav with voice prompts. However, I have experienced issues when using the sat nav:1. On occasions the sat nav does not follow the route and diverts off for no reason. I had to recheck to make sure that my route was not incorrect which it wasn’t but the navigation rerouted the same diversion every time. I have had to close the app and use Googlemaps when trying to make a specific time to meet with a friend.2. Time estimate is wildly inaccurate sometimes. One route I was following estimated over two and half hours for a 13 mile route when a 32 mile route the previous day had correctly estimated about three hours - it took 2hrs 50 minutes3. On occasions the Sat nav stops following the route and reroutes to the beginning. The 32 mile route rerouted to the start point after about 7 miles and starting the navigation again did not resolve the issue but directed me to the start point. I had to open up the map which does allow you to show your location but obviously does not give turn by turn navigation. I would be tempted to upgrade to the premium version but will not do so until I can be confident that the app is working correctly and I can trust the guidance.

For the most part, Bikemap is a very good app. It can be used while the app is closed, does not use a huge amount of battery and I am currently using it as evidence for my Duke of Edinburg physical section.HOWEVER, there is one major issue about this app that needs to be addressed. I have been doing my bike routes weekly and saving them to the app, as I was planning to upload the evidence to the DofE website at the end of my 6 months. About 3 months into my experience, I reached Bikemap level 2 and was asked to sign in using my email (up until this point, I was using the app signed out with relatively no issue). I tried to access my saved routes to take screenshots in case of any issues with signing in, however this did not seem to be an option. I then signed in with my email and my Bikemap account was created. However, upon signing in, I discovered that all of my previous saved routes had been deleted, meaning that I will likely have to redo 3 months of progress, as I can’t seem to recover these routes. If you need routes as some form of evidence, ALWAYS TAKE SCREENSHOTS AS WELL AS SAVING in case of any similar issues you might face. Bikemap, if there is any way that this issue could be fixed, it would be much appreciated.

Handy app
llars0689
Very handy app. I really like the route suggestions for a more bike friendly route. Much better than the routes Google Maps give for cyclists... I only wish that the app used Google or Apple maps instead of OpenMaps and the Bikemap app default. The Google Maps on the web version is great, please update the app to include it.Update: just recently with one of the updates, the routing is messed up… It used to be very accurate with finding the best routes, but that is no longer the case… for example, I will choose a “balanced” route which will tell me it will take 45 minutes. So I will switch it to do the “fastest” route, and it then tells me that same destination will be 56 minutes… it will do this with almost every destination I try to route too… it’s becoming pretty useless, since Apple Maps usually finds a better route now. Not sure what changed, since it used to be great and very accurate. But not so much now. Please fix!
