i newspaper app

The content is excellent, but I’m not sure of the merits of this as a paid for app. I’m currently on a year’s free trial, but I would not pay for it. All of these articles are extracted from the main web site/print paper and then ‘curated’ into this app. As the website is free, I’m struggling to see the logic that would mean you would pay for the same articles you can read on the website.

I can see that a payment could be required for a digital version of the print newspaper, but not for this app.

I would stress that the content, though, is excellent. If the website was behind a paywall, I would have no issues in subscribing.

Developer Response ,

Hi there, thanks for your review and for your positive feedback of the app and the content. Although it wasn't at the time you wrote the review, we think it's helpful to say that the website content is now in fact behind a paywall, so both the app and the majority website is for paying subscribers only. We hope this helps future readers of this review.

Great news - clunky login procedures

I would have rated this App higher if it didn’t keep telling me to login when I already had. And then telling me that I could sign up for £xx when I already paid. And intermittently telling me that my password isn’t valid, even though it is, and it isn’t a typing error because my phone automatically fills out the details, which works sometimes and not at other times.

This same problem has continued intermittently since day 1, sometimes refusing to log me in, and at other times it goes straight to the article of choice… you just don’t ever know if luck will be on your side - sometimes to the point of exasperation and not wanting to even bother trying, due to the possible rigmarole. Not one to give in easily, (if there is something I really want to read), I have persisted and when it works, the news, articles and puzzles are great! Definitely worth paying for an annual subscription - but I wish the login was smoother and more reliable.

Developer Response ,

Hello Emjay. Thanks for the review and feedback. So this sounds like we need to do better re log in. I'd love to find out more about the specifics of your experience. Please do email App@inews.co.uk so we can better understand what is happening on your log in journey.
Best regards the i. team

Good content but not as user friendly as I’d hoped

We’ve been in the habit of buying the i two or three times a week, as well as subscribing to another newspaper. When my subscription ended and there was a big increase in price I thought I’d give the i digital a try, with an introductory offer. Whilst the content is good I’m finding the app better on iphone than iPad where there is a lot of unused screen so even the headlines are small. I like the range of puzzles (though really miss the ones in the newspaper like Mensa, minesweeper and others). My colour blind husband is absolutely unable to play Guessword as he can’t distinguish the colours. I’d like more subsections for the headers too - for example the ‘Life and More’ is so varied it seems a bit of a hotch potch of things that don’t fit anywhere else.

Developer Response ,

Thanks for your honest rating and review. It's on our roadmap to improve the app for tablets so please bear with us on this one. Your feedback on the app navigation and colour of Guessword puzzle is also helpful so many thanks for that. If there's more specific feedback you'd like to give us we'd welcome this via app@inews.co.uk so we can understand how we can help. Best regards the i team.
