Limna: Art Gallery Prices 17+

This app strips away the intimidation that invariably comes with buying art. I recently found myself reaching for it whilst browsing in a London gallery. Where I would usually not engage with any of the art sellers in the gallery, Limna gave me the confidence to challenge the asking price of a piece I was interested in and ask intelligent questions. For once I knew what I was talking about!

It’s a good start with a great meat bid to measure the artwork size. However, whilst it gives you a basic indication of how much a more general average value of any artist’s 100x100 painting/photograph, more could be done to add different types of artwork selection (such as sketches, lithographs, prints/signed prints, etchings, drawings, oil/watercolour paintings…). There is a risk someone looking to invest in a piece of art could be fobbed off into buying an artist’s piece of art that is not a photograph/painting, and it’s value substantially lower than what this app suggests. The app could give a false sense of security to the user/potential naive art purchaser with little experience.

It could also be worth adding a little more understanding to the app as to how you calculate the momentum and other calculations, some seem a little… questionable. But I guess it could be based on the apps own algorithm structure and calculation. Would be good to understand where and how you calculate this?

Also, what do you do with your data from people using this app to search. Is it provided to 3rd parties such as galleries/data firms? Does it get reused in your own app algos? It would be good to hear more about it this too.

Thank you for your suggestions - many of which are due to be rolled out very soon! While we started with Paintings originally, we expanded to include Photography, and will shortly be releasing our estimations for Unique Works on Paper (many of the mediums you've listed) - all with the aim of giving more people confidence to buy art at all levels.

Regarding how we calculate our insights, this is largely explained in our FAQs (accessible via Settings in-app or on the website) or via the "?" icon on each artist's profile. We are currently expanding our explanations for each individual section, so that it's even more transparent how we reach our conclusions. We are proud to utilise the largest art database in existence to provide art-insider insights to our users - from our price estimates for new works, which correlate with an artist's cultural significance, through to broader contextual information for each artist's profile based on their career to date.

We take our users' data very seriously, as outlined in our App Privacy Policy (https://limna.ai/limna-app/privacy-policy.html). Our users' behaviour in-app is processed to provide them with better experiences on Limna; for example, each validation or artist search on the app is what informs every artist recommendation that appears on our users' Dashboards.

Game changer? NO! Annoying? YES. Trustworthy? NO. i searched multiple artists who i follow and your results ARE NOT COMPREHENSIVE. Therefore to say people can buy with confidence from this app is ridiculous. NO DATA IS BETTER THAN YOUR INCORRECT DATA. You don’t include the vast majority of their shows or artwork sales, therefore your results are factually incorrect. As a result all your stats were vastly inaccurate. My trust that you have the technology to comprehensively audit the market is lost. It’s obvious you don’t have the ability to harvest art market data. I would have loved it if you could do what you say you can do. But massively over promising and under delivering doesn’t work. i will be deleting this app.

Our art database is the largest in existence, dating from 1863 to present day, with new exhibitions being added daily 💫. This allows us to provide an impartial 3rd party view of the art market, specifically the primary market. Our price estimates have a c.85% accuracy level to list prices in the primary market, meaning those checked might have been secondary market works.
