What’s New

Version 6.6.7

This release is a significant one, as it will be the last update for users who are on iOS12 and below. With the app improvements and features we want to add, we simply can’t do these things prior to iOS13. So please if you are able, update your device to iOS13 or above to continue receiving our app updates. Also in this release…

* Did the app crash when you sometimes tried to play a video? Yeah, we saw this happen too, very annoying and all fixed now.

* When changing the app theme, bookmarks would get annoyed and hide themselves. Not particularly helpful at all, but now they are happy again in any theme you set.

We have some great updates in the pipeline, so stay tuned for more throughout the year.

Manchester Evening News App

Would be useful if it worked!!! Outdated articles often left on for days. News notifications.. when you click on them the app opens, only to find a picture and the headline but no article!!! Then you try and find it within the app and it cannot be found, until hours later. Not great, there have been several updates recently but this bug hasn’t been addressed. Could be so much better if the glitches were ironed out and articles were updated regularly throughout the day.

Overall, a convenient way to get my local news, however…

Much more needs to be done to moderate the comments sections on each of the articles, it’s almost as though the main purpose of the comments is to allow the uneducated, the racist, the bigoted and the just plain old unpleasant to spread their hate and poison online. The few well intentioned and decent commenters are way outnumbered and that’s a shame. It’s not as though there are many main perpetrators, there aren’t. I’d prefer either a staggered comments section where people can post comments which then get vetted or - preferably - remove the comments functionality from the app. It’s not needed - I’d suggest that most users want to read articles by journalists and not the hate spread by the few. Yes, I know that I don’t need to read the comments section - that’s not the point - the point is that by allowing the hate speech and not moderating the comments the MEN is allowing the normalisation of it in society and sharing your platform with racists, bigots, etc. Leave the app to share content from journalists, if readers are interested in commenting let them do so via social media (where there is moderation and consequences.) Clearly there is the availability of removing the ability to comment on some articles as they are posted, if MEN takes action in some places and not others this suggests a ‘clickbait’ attitude rather than sharing local news.

Annoying

I’m getting quite sick of this app now. Update after update and still it’s a million miles away from other apps. The last upload said the playing videos issue was resolved. Not true!!
The videos very rarely play. Yet most headlines are... watch this. It’s funny the ads play with no issue before the video.
On top of all this the app crashes and freezes more than a crash test dummy in a Tesco freezer van!
I’ve spent my whole life reading the Manchester Evening News even now when I don’t live in Manchester and over at my home in LA but your making it not worth it. I’m not fighting for the news. Take a look at the sky news app and just start a fresh. I really hope you do get it right eventually but if the next upload is the same I’ll make reading the MEN a thing I used to do.

Developer Response ,

Hi Danny,

We'd like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.

On our test devices, the videos are playing as intended so it could be something that's happening on your device or even an edge case that we couldn't reproduce on our end.

In order to investigate that better, could you please message us at mobile_app_feedback@reachplc.com and give us more details of this video issue you're experiencing? How often does that happen? Does it happen on all videos? Did you notice any pattern? Does it happen on Wi-Fi, mobile data or both? The same goes for the freezing issue.

Be as detailed as you wish all small piece of information can help us to identify what could be causing it. If you could also add screenshots or videos of the issue this really help us to understand what could be happening.

Regards,

The ReachPLC App Team
