The first version is the best

... because it's the simplest, the most intuitive and creatively most helpful. The later elaborations haven't improved it, in fact they've diminished it.

Just the thing to kick start you

Very nice way to add a little randomness to the process when you're stuck.

I use my deck of cards more....

Not bad... But. When at a creative logjam.... I find the physicality of shuffling, spreading the deck and picking a card better as a mind clearing the buffer exercise...
