I love it

This app has helped me pick up the piano after not being able to afford private lessons. I had been playing for a couple of years and lapsed - this has made me want to practice. I’ve found it particularly good for improving sight reading and rhythm, which I’ve previously been weak at. I find myself drawing on previous lessons with my real life tutor to complete the challenges, so I wonder if complete newbies might find it too tricky to enjoy once they get beyond the basic stages. Also, now that I’m on level seven I’ve noticed that not all of the cords (particularly those that include D3, which I have to whack HARD to get the app to read, even when played alone) don’t always land. But this is such a minor niggle- and the app lets you progress even if they are missed - it’s still getting five stars. Also, if you are reading this developers - I’d love some more baroque and modern classical stuff (is Jon Cage available?). Thank you for this guys - you’ve made me a musician again.

Amazing For Beginners

My parents bought me a piano, thinking I would use it, although I didn’t understand sheet music very well and I couldn’t concentrate on lesson books because they seemed boring. I first got this app when I saw my father learning with guitar on this app, and it seemed he had got far in a few months. I got it and after 4 days, I was able to play fast songs with BOTH hands. I’m so glad I got this app — now I know how to play piano. And for beginners, it starts of with just listing the letters to play. But as you go along, it teaches you sheet music. It also allows practice mode, which you can change the speed of the song to practice, and then to perform directly.

Professional musician advice

I’m a professional musician and apple advertised this to me so I thought, why not, give it a go, I’m bored in lockdown.... the app is nice. There seems to be a slight issue with it being sensitive to when notes are played at the same time or sometimes it detected ‘wrong notes’ when I played what was written. The main annoyance for me was as a tutor as well as performer this app seems to not really do much teaching. No technique, not much explanation on rhythms or anything really. Quite basic... good for a bit of ‘fun’ but please please don’t pay the £100 for this stuff! Put your hard earned money into a living musician... someone who put in countless hours to learn their craft and to teach it (god knows musicians need the money right now after the pandemic!) Learn the correct ways to position your fingers, hands, wrists, arms, back etc to avoid pain and complicated issues later on!
Not to badger the app! It’s ok! I do believe these things have a place in learning music however it shouldn’t be seen as a replacement of a real tutor. Hence only 2 stars.
