Description

PianoRemote is a control app developed for Kawai digital pianos, allowing players to change sounds, adjust settings, and enjoy the wide variety of built-in music.[*1]

■ Please note that PianoRemote requires Bluetooth permission in order to scan for Bluetooth MIDI devices. Please approve the Bluetooth permission request to ensure that PianoRemote functions correctly.

・ Easy operation of your Kawai digital piano using a smartphone or tablet
PianoRemote allows various functions of the digital piano to be easily selected.

・ Consistent UI design with Kawai digital piano touch panel
PianoRemote is designed to allow easy, intuitive operation via a smartphone or tablet.
The user interface is standardised, meaning there is no need to learn new operations.

・ Music player feature that can be used like a music app
PianoRemote includes a wide variety of songs and classical pieces that are built-in to Kawai digital pianos.[*2]
This music can be controlled in the same way as regular music app. However, it’s also possible to change the sound used for playback, allowing songs and classical to be enjoyed with a different tonal character and atmosphere.

・ Interact with music using “Lesson” and “Concert Magic” modes
In addition to listening to the built-in songs and classical pieces, the additional “Lesson” and “Concert Magic” modes allow musicians to practice the music, and non-musicians to enjoy playing pieces and learning rhythm with a single finger.[*3]

・ Control various built-in functions
PianoRemote can be used to control various functions of the Kawai digital piano. For example, the Metronome is an essential aid for practise, the Virtual Technician allows the sound and other aspects of the piano to be adjusted to suit one’s person preference, while the Dual and Split functions allow different sounds to be combined for more engaging performances.[*4]

・ Straightforward connection using Bluetooth MIDI
PianoRemote supports Bluetooth MIDI wireless communication, allowing immediate connection to the Kawai digital piano without the need for additional cables.[*5]

*1 A compatible Kawai Digital Piano must be connected to a smartphone or tablet.
*2 Copyrighted songs are not included among the piano’s built-in songs.
*3 Some songs do not support “Lesson” and “Concert Magic” modes due to the composition of the data.
*4 “Recorder” and “USB Memory Player” function control is not supported.
*5 Connection via USB cable or a Bluetooth MIDI adapter such as the QuiccoSound mi.1 also supported.

What models are supported?

Thinking of buying a Kawai KDP120 and checking this app out. Confused as to whether it’s compatible. App description says not, but Kawai’s website says yes, and manual within app agrees. Confused!

Works well but kills battery

I didn’t have any of the problems mentioned in other reviews. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and a CA99. The app looks good and works much faster and more smoothly than the screen on the piano itself. I found the performance switching between different sounds instantaneous and it was nice being able to flick between all the sound options on the phone screen on the music stand rather than with the touchscreen on the piano.

However, a couple days after installing I noticed unusually low battery for the time of day and had a look in the battery history. Since it had been installed, the “activity” bars (the lower plot) were maxed out and piano remote was using 98% of the battery for any given hour, on “audio/background activity”. Before installing the app I had about 6h of total activity per day - the two days after installing were both at 24hrs of activity. It looks like it’s using about 5% of my battery every 3 hours, entirely in the background.

I don’t want to have to remember to force quit the app when I’m done using it, and it is clearly doing something which stops it from being put to sleep in the background like every other app on my phone.

I’ll be uninstalling the app until it’s fixed to not use power in the background, which is a shame, because I quite liked it.

Where are the developers?

First thing first: the app remains VERY active in the background when not used, draining the battery rapidly.

Secondly sometimes when I do something in the recorder after I record the app starts doing some sort of fan noise. I’m very disappointed especially when I paid thousands of pounds for a good hybrid piano with a very good electric piano sound, but the sound settings are controlled separately via Bluetooth using an app that I don’t think the developers are improving any better.

Other small annoying bits are the classic demo pieces. Why are they not played entirely? They start in the middle and run for a minute or something. What’s the reason of having many random pieces and not able to listen to them from the beginning to the end?
