An ocean dip with a side of dysentery? No thanks. Our award-winning, free-to-download app is the only national Water Quality service keeping you in the loop with what’s happening where in our waters. When it comes to living in the UK, shit happens. And far too much of it in our waterscapes. Untreated sewage and wastewater regularly gush from thousands of sewer overflows around the country. It stinks. Add to that the impact of severe rainfall – which churns all manner of unknown pollutants into the ocean from farming, septic tanks, roads, and urban areas – and it’s not a pretty picture. The Safer Seas and River Service makes it easy to check in, search out a swim, surf, or sail spot, and be served the latest pollution alert for over 450 locations across the UK. The app also includes complementary beach information including tide times and lifeguard services and allows you to take direct action on water quality issues by getting involved in our campaigns or emailing you MP or Water Company CEO when an alert in place. Users can submit a sickness report if they've become unwell after using the water to help aid our campaigning work and reveal the true extent to which sewage pollution is impacting human health. I have long been a supporter and admirer of Surfers Against Sewage and all of the work they do, so when I saw this app promoted on their social media I downloaded it immediately. It allows me to be confident as to when and where I (and my children) swim each day. It has also made me aware of the shocking regularity of poor water conditions in our area and made us all the more committed to pressuring our local government to do something about it

Safer seas is an essential app and the only reliable way of finding out if sewage has been discharged before you get in the sea. In most cases there is no other way of knowing, so it could literally be a lifesaving app. The only reason I don’t give it five stars is that sometimes the alert history does not correctly load, so you can’t always see recent data. The alert notification and status of the beach always work and I am sure the minor bug will be fixed soon.Thank you for this amazing service.

This is a fabulous app for anyone wanting the latest update on beach and sea conditions in their area. Living on the coast we were recently subjected to a sewage spill in the sea. This app kept us up to date on our own beach conditions but also surrounding areas to allow us to search for a beach/bathe area we could visit. Regularly visits to the app notifies us that our beach was now open which proved valuable. Thanks for a great app!

We’ve updated the content in our FAQs to make information clearer, added sewage overflow locations for Northern Ireland bathing waters, and improved the sickness report form to include more information. We’ve also fixed bugs and made general improvements to prevent issues and ensure a smoother experience.
