Ratings and Reviews
Mostly a convenient way to enjoy The Guardian, some weaknesses
Use of this app comes as an extra with a subscription to the print edition: very handy, and not only when we’re away. But there are some problems I’d like to see addressed.
One is that the editorial content is not the same as the print edition. Sometimes an article in the app has extra verbiage that has been culled in print. And at least once I’ve seen an article I the app that was missing crucial details present in the printed text making nonsense of the (identical) headline. It would really suit me better if the app just reproduced the print version precisely.
It’s great having the crosswords available in the app. Two small things could improve that. First, keep the time visible while solving. It disappears as soon as you type something and some of us need reminding when we should be off to do something else. Second, the clues and the grid used to scroll separately, which was easier.
New version is very disappointing
I have read the Guardian for a long time — originally in print and now online or via the app. While the main Guardian app is excellent, I also valued the Editions app, and its predecessors, for offering the opportunity to read a curated set of articles that were published daily and could be read ‘cover to cover’.
The new version of the Editions app is very disappointing and I have stopped using it completely now. It simply isn’t a pleasant or even functional reading experience, even on a large-ish smartphone (such as an iPhone 15 Plus). It is a little better on an iPad, but ultimately this feels like a highly retrograde step and a missed opportunity. The original iteration of what became Editions was billed as the traditional newspaper reimagined for the digital age. The new version, which is simply a PDF reader that is inferior to the native Pressreader app, reflects a much less ambitious vision.
I note the reaction to the new Editions app has been almost universally, and highly, negative. I wonder if the Guardian, which used to pride itself on being at the forefront of newspaper design - both traditional and digital - will pay any attention to the views of its loyal readers?
Awful, backward leaning new design!!!
My fears have come true. Your new ‘updated version’ of the Guardian Editons app is merely a ‘PDF’ version of the paper! I have subscribed to editions for over ten years and love the ease that I can browse through your high quality daily news stories and with ease in digitally intuitive, easy to read article. It was so easily navigable to find the stories that interested me. I thought a clearly thought out, major update to the app would at least have some digitially intuitive actions for the digital user - clear icons to zoom in on stories to easily read for example - not aimlessly splaying fingers around to even be able to read the text in each article. The thought of it even brings on a headache! This makes me so sad because I love reading my Guardian editions each day but I’m not up to scrolling around a tiny PDF, heavily detailed screen, trying to find the stories I am interested in. I can only imagine the app developers have been coerced into this and my only hope is that my thoughts align to everyone else’s and the app will once again update. For now, I guess it is goodbye from me :(
