The travel app from Lothian has everything you need to get around Edinburgh with Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams.
Open up the app and we'll show you live times for the three nearest stops near you
An interactive map shows you every bus and tram stop around you - just tap on one to bring up an instant departure board - perfect for comparing services at different stops.
Want to get somewhere fast? Just search for a place, address, business name... anything, and we'll show you the best way to get there. You can also search for routes - we'll even show you if a bus is nearby and show you it moving on a map.
SATNAV FOR BUS & TRAM
Plan your commute, nights out or even just a trip to the shops - we use a real-time journey planning system that takes network delays into account when showing you the best way to get to your destination, with full step-by-step instructions.
SHARE YOUR JOURNEY
We've made it easy to let your friends and family know when you'll arrive - just track your bus using the app and share a link by email, Twitter, Facebook or WhatsApp. Your friends can track your bus online (they don't need the app) and see when you'll arrive.
Using the companion m-ticket app, you can purchase single tickets and DAYtickets for many of our services.
Finally, please note that the app requires data access and works best with GPS on. Please be aware the continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
The Transport for Edinburgh app now knows which bus you're on, and when you'll arrive at your destination.
It's something we've all done: boarded the bus, sat down and wondered - when will I reach my stop? You could search for the bus number in the app, but now there's an easier way - as soon as you board one of our buses, you'll see which bus it is right on the app's Home Screen, with live tracking for all upcoming stops.
This works with Next Stop Announcements on TFE Talk as well - now you don't need to type in the service number and destination to get announcements, the app knows which bus you're on automatically.
Ratings and Reviews
The app is excellent, well designed and easy to use (hence 4 stars). HOWEVER, it is completely let down by Lothian’s bus tracking data. There appears to be two ways of tracking: GPS, which is accurate and tells you where the bus is. Timetable, which is completely inaccurate and at the whim of traffic, bus breakdowns or whatever else.
The result is seeing a bus that is allegedly a few minutes away, then due, then nonexistent. The number of times I’ve sprinted for a bus only to find the estimated time go back up to 10+ minutes... the app tells you that bus times might be estimates - why not mark them as “timetabled” and “tracked”? Then we can ignore some of them. There might be a way of seeing this already, some times are grey, some are black - in my experience this doesn’t seem to always reflect accurate times.
If you’re looking for accuracy or reliability please chose another app. This app is so inaccurate, misleading and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been late because of incorrect ‘live departure’ times. So frustrating. Buses are appearing and disappearing after a couples of times having to refresh the waiting times. Then it dropped again. I see the bus colony but the app says no bus is expected. Bus 300 has been added to replace bus 35 and after weeks in operation the app does not recognise this route and buss 300 is no where to be found!!! We are talking about Edinburgh capital city’s main transport app! It’s bellow the standard of any other transport apps I have used in capitals around the world. Takes ages to load and often doesn’t recognise your location. Get it fixed! Tip for people: use google where you can see true live reflection of live departures and ALL buses included (300 route) as well! This review goes right on apple store. I doubt you’ll do anything about this but at least people can know and use other reliable alternatives!! Embarrassing!
It’s Almost Great but Unstable
Firstly it gets nearly all the big important stuff right. I want to make that clear before I start to make it sound unreliable!
1. Route Planning is very simple by entering address and you can save favourites like Home and Work........BUT depending on which way the end is blowing the address search does not work and only offers bus end destinations!
2. Ticket Buying and ETickets - very useful feature and saves carrying exact money ......BUT the buy function only works about 50% of time and you’re never sure if you have bought or not? In addition the activation process has far too many steps and is slow and non-responsive. Many time I’ve been stood holding my phone to driver with a rotating icon waiting for bus app server to respond. This delays buses!
3. Bus Timing - the actual bus services in Edinburgh are superb and the frequency and time to next bus is really useful........BUT it can be wrong!! I’m not sure how I can get live correct bus gps info from Google maps but not from this app. My tip if timing is important Cross check Google Maps!
I’ve waited a year to give the review as I was sure these teething troubles would be quickly sorted as they are so obvious......BUT NO!! Did I say it crashes a lot?
