Unlike some train ticket apps, the Transport for Wales app lets you book and pay for your journeys without added booking fees.

- Explorer passes that offer great value unlimited travel for one or four days on specific parts of our network.
You can also spread the cost of your tickets with Pay in 3 from PayPal when you spend £30 or more, and easily manage your Pay-As-You-Go account for contactless travel (available on specific parts of the Transport for Wales network).

With your tickets stored on the TfW app, you can enjoy the convenience of paperless train travel with train tickets added to your smartphone’s payment wallet. You can also quickly change or exchange your tickets in the app up to 18.00 on the day before you travel without any hidden charges.

If you purchased an Advance ticket to travel on a TfW service (for all or part of your journey) using their app or website, you’re covered by our automatic Delay Repay scheme if your train is delayed or cancelled. This means no forms to fill in to claim any compensation you may be entitled to.

Ratings and Reviews
Much improved app but still lacks Apple Wallet tickets
The app has undergone a revision that makes it a much improved app in comparison to the way it was. Railcard users will see that the card they used before will appear above the list. The ticket sometimes wouldn’t download to the wallet but seems to have been fixed.
The glaring omission is that you don’t get an option on the app to add the ticket to Apple Wallet. I believe this would be a deciding factor in choosing TrainLine app over the TFW app. This is a shame and will surely result in lost revenue for TFW
Previously used destinations also are retained.

Fussy and flakey
The user has to do so much to get very little. For example, buying a ticket involves so many different screens and boxes to check. It does remember your previous journeys and rail cards and puts them at the top of the list but there isn’t an option of buying the same ticket for the next day for commuters. On top of that, the user has to view, then download and then activate the ticket purchased - online (when most stations here have no access to the internet).
Once you do have a ticket with a specific date and time, the app doesn’t let you know of any delays or cancellations. There have been so many problems with the trains, but the app is useless and I have to find out before I lose signal on the National Rail website! Then once I realise the train is delayed or cancelled the app doesn’t automatically offer me a refund, I have to go to a website when back online.
If it were a restaurant with a reservation I’ve made, the restaurant would contact me immediately if there was a problem. Otherwise the restaurant would be labelled “flakey”, unreliable and a let down.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We work hard to strike a balance between providing sufficient information for infrequent travellers and ease of use for regular commuters. Based on feedback, we will be introducing eTicket as a purchase option on our App shortly which does not require the download and activation steps. When you purchase a new ticket, a journey notification option is available. If you book an advance ticket with TfW via the App, you will receive an email notification if your booked journey qualifies for Delay Repay.
App didn’t find trains for me at first but second third attempts works fine
Can I ask if you guys are moving into e-tickets in the future?
I think with numerous covid outbreaks not everyone enjoys the public touch screen option at the moment. Personally I’d find an e-ticket so much more convenient. Being able to book from home and just walk onto the train without having to cross over a bridge twice to collect the paper tickets would be great…
I travel from Bache to Chester return journey 3 times a week. Today I searched for ticket information and the app reported no trains available. Obviously we know there are trains running regularly. It is possible it’s a case of’operator error’ as I have now been able to book my tickets and the app works fine. Just thought I’d let you know. A question please-will the app notify if trains aren’t running for some reason? So we can know etc. Thank you and good luck with the app.
