Description
Experience the magic of GPS audio walks, cycles, drives and even boat rides with VoiceMap's self-guided tours in over 450 destinations worldwide.
VoiceMap tours are like podcasts that move with you, to tell stories about what you’re seeing right now. They're produced by insightful local storytellers, including journalists, filmmakers, novelists, podcasters, and tour guides. Sir Ian McKellen has even created a tour. It's around London's West End, where he’s performed for over 50 years.
Features:
• Explore at your own pace. Start and stop tours whenever you like, then use the resume option to pick up exactly where you left off.
• With GPS autoplay, you can focus on your surroundings, not the screen. Tap on Start, and let VoiceMap guide you.
• VoiceMap works offline. After you download a tour, the audio will be available offline along with an offline map.
• If you do go off in the wrong direction, VoiceMap plays an audio alert, and you can follow the map on your screen to the next location.
• Listen to tours as many times as you like, both in the destination and with your feet up, at home, using Virtual Playback. This turns every tour into a podcast or audio book.
• With over 1,400 free and paid tours, VoiceMap offers huge variety
VoiceMap works indoors too, combining insightful content that extends your attention span with an interface that helps you make informed choices about how you spend your time at a growing range of museums and art galleries around the world.
Press:
“High-quality self-guided walking tours...Narrated by local experts, they provide insight into corners of the city sometimes overlooked by regular guided tours.”
Lonely Planet
“We may be biased, but could there be anything more helpful than having a journalist in your pocket when touring a new city? How about a historian, a novelist or just a really passionate local? VoiceMap culls city-specific stories from them all and fits them neatly into walking tours.”
New York Times
User Testimonials:
“My wife and I really enjoyed exploring Bruges at our own pace with this audio tour, and there were some memorable stories that the narrator shared. Also, the app worked great in relation to the location-based services. We easily followed the map and the audio was triggered in the appropriate spots. In comparison to the packs of people wandering the city with tour guides, this was a much better fit for us.”
Viator review, Rick A
“Great quality information - interesting and entertaining. The time flew by. And no waffle! This is far better than any other guided tour we found - they are much more expensive and far less informative. And you can do this tour any time, any day, at your own pace, and even do it twice!”
Tripadvisor review, Carcassonne 's Medieval Walls: A Self-Guided Tour
"Thoroughly recommend. Really enjoyed the tour. Very well done. Packed with information and took me round streets I’d never have thought to walk round. An audio and visual treat. Thank you."
Janet, NYC
“It was enjoyable to be under no time pressure to freely roam the city of Pisa as we so pleased. Wandering from attraction to attraction. The app is clever, concise and easy to use! Would do again - especially with another person or solo traveler.”
GetYourGuide review, Grace L
“Great value for money, interesting and very clear and easy to follow! I learnt lots about London I didn't already know and I have lived here over 30 years.”
London’s Alternative History Tour, Carmella V.
** Just so you know, GPS runs in the background while you're on a tour. This decreases battery life and it's best to start a tour with your device fully charged.
What’s New
Version 13.0.0
We published our 100th tour in London a few days ago. VoiceMap now covers close to 3,500 locations there, spread across intersecting routes over 250 kilometres long – or 165 miles long, if you prefer.
In total, we now have roughly three days of audio about this one destination. When you consider that VoiceMap has grown to offer tours in 450 other destinations, this milestone highlights why we think you’ll find the new features in version 13 of the app, codenamed Pepys, particularly useful.
With VoiceMap Pepys, you can:
• Follow destinations and get a push notification or an email when there’s a new tour in London, Ljubljana, Los Angeles or the Liwa Oasis.
• Follow your favourite publishers – from history teacher Sam Brearley, who published our 100th tour in London, to Context Travel, which has tours in 15 countries by an incredible network of destination experts.
• Subscribe to our newsletter “Senses of Direction”, which celebrates curiosity and the human connections that make travel meaningful.
• Get push notifications to help you save battery if you stop to get a drink, grab a meal or take in a panoramic view while you’re out doing a tour.
Why Pepys? We normally give app releases destination names, but we used London for version 5, back in 2019 when we had 50 tours there.
Samuel Pepys was a diarist who chronicled London before and after the Great Fire of 1666. His personal recollections about ordinary life – along with art, plagues, politics and war – are still considered one of the best guides to the city.
Pepys’ diary entries add up to over one million words. VoiceMap’s London tours come in at a little under 650,000, so we’ve got some work to do. Pepys is also a reminder that the personal perspectives behind all our tours – shared by nearly 800 publishers from all walks of life – are at least as important as our growing list of destinations.
Ratings and Reviews
Amazing experience!!!
My sister and I went on trip to London like we have done many times before, but decided that we wanted to do something different. We looked at a few different "walking tour" apps but none seemed like what we wanted until we saw this one. It was a free app with one free tour which we thought we would try. The tour was spoken by Sir Ian McKellen about some of the theatres of London, which we are very interested in anyway. The tour worked brilliantly we only had to look at the map a couple of times once as I got distracted by a coffee shop and talked over the audio and once to make 100% sure we were going in the right direction. We were amazed by how well the gps worked in the built up places in London. I will be recommending this app to anyone visiting London as it showed us places and things in London we had never even noticed before although parts we knew very well. The audio was entertaining, interesting and very easy to follow, but with the security of not having to constantly look at or hold a phone, (just remember your headphones and possibly a way of multiple people being able to hear). Be aware depending on how fast or slow you walk there are times where it is quiet but as long as you follow the instructions it will kick in again. We can't wait for our next trip to London when I am sure we will downloaded one of the tours which you have to pay for and I hope it is as engaging, entertaining and as easy to follow as the theatre tour!
Can’t recommend this enough
During a short visit to Barcelona, we did the bus tour and I also downloaded this walking tour. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It was informative, easy to follow and huge fun! If you took a wrong turn, it was easy to get back on track. You can stop the tour at any time, if you fancy a coffee or something a bit stronger, and then restart when you want. It was humorous but he had obviously done his homework and showed the sights of Barcelona that no one knows about. We were lucky with the weather and in February, it wasn’t that busy so we had enough time for photo ops without being bombed! Lol!!! Definitely worth the money and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to take their time and see the bits of Barcelona that the tourists don’t usually see.
Excellent
Did the audio tour instead of tour guided one so we could do it at a time of our choosing and at our pace. Found it perfectly easy to purchase and download. The instructions were pretty straightforward whilst walking round. We went wrong once but it was easy enough to correct and pick it back up if you follow the map provided on your phone. Although we walked past most of the sites picked out in the 4 days we had already been in Cologne, we had obviously not really ‘seen’ them as, the audio tour highlighted them and gave us interesting Roman facts about them. Very worthwhile and enjoyable. Definitely one to recommend
