Editors’ Notes

People power meets the open road in this amazing navigation app. Waze’s crowd-sourced alerts come from real drivers, not algorithms, delivering info you won’t see anywhere else to keep your commute flowing. The friendly interface and convenient detour routing really help the app shine, and its social-network integration make road trips with buddies a blast.

Great idea, poor execution

This app is great I won’t lie. The reports are very handy and the traffic avoidance is lifesaving in comparison to using google maps or car built in navigation. But over the years Waze still has many issues that haven’t been fixed yet. 1. Why does finding a route take so long to calculate. Even small routes and even when I have a perfect internet connection. 2. Why is reporting an incident on Waze so hard to do while driving. It’s encouraging you to touch your phone more with small buttons and hard to read text and would much prefer for voice commands and bigger more friendly user texts and buttons. 3. Traffic shows up less on maps than it used to. 4. Default voice sounds very robotic (Kate) and it seems like this is a very recent issue. 5. No heads up option for navigation. 6. Crashes and fails a lot more time than google maps and apple maps. Happened on all our devices with Waze. But apart from these issues the app is probably one of the best navigation apps.

Great navigation and traffic - poor Bluetooth

Been a Wazer for a number of years now and swear by it, particularly for regular journeys on known routes where there is likely to be traffic issues to avoid and getting to football matches on time. One niggle though and this has been an issue on my current car (2016 BMW 2 series gran tourer) and previous car (2012 Vauxhall Astra) - the Bluetooth connectivity is erratic: it always cuts off the first second or two of navigation instruction speech when the car radio is on, or no radio is on. It does work fine if playing when using the iPhone as an audio source, ie iTunes or another app, it actually fades the sound out and the navigation over it, as you’d expect. When on radio setting it just cuts across it completely, but misses the first word or two. Also, actually connecting it to Bluetooth is temperamental, regularly there is no sound at all, this is when charging the iPhone via the lightening/USB port whilst trying to navigate using Bluetooth. It is difficult to force a Bluetooth connection as it defaults to a dock connection and cannot be overridden. Generally I find myself unplugging the charger a lot and even stopping the ignition to try and reset. A friend with a VW Golf and iPhone also has the same issues. I’m on an iPhone X and always update to the latest iOS software and latest version of Waze straight away.
