What to watch this Christmas

What we’re streaming right now. Ho, ho, ho!

Christmas is a time for good food, great company and watching something fun with your nearest and dearest.

Classic movies, comedy specials, one-off series: the holiday TV schedules are always fantastic, and this year will be no exception. Here are some of the best shows you should look out for this Christmas…

Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special, BBC iPlayer

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a decade since Gavin & Stacey last graced our screens, but the beloved sitcom is back for an hour-long Christmas reunion special.

Bryn (Rob Brydon) is cooking dinner for the whole clan this Christmas in Barry and Gavin and Stacey are now proud parents to a 10-year-old. The entire cast has come back, so this is definitely one you won’t want to miss.

A Christmas Carol, BBC iPlayer

Charles Dickens owns a little piece of Christmas. Whether you love to rewatch Alistair Sim, Patrick Stewart or Michael Caine and Kermit, the story of Ebenezer Scrooge is timeless.

This time around, Guy Pearce plays the infamous miser in A Christmas Carol. The three-part BBC miniseries, from the creators of Peaky Blinders, also stars Andy Serkis, Stephen Graham and Charlotte Riley.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea, All 4

A treat for kids and adults alike, this animated adaptation of the late Judith Kerr’s classic children’s book The Tiger Who Came to Tea is bound to enchant.

It features the voices of Benedict Cumberbatch, Tamsin Greig and David Oyelowo – a delight for the kids and a nostalgia-fest for big kids at heart.

The Great Christmas Bake Off, All 4

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a spot of pudding. And where better to go for inspiration than Bake Off?

So, if your Christmas cake didn’t sate your sugar cravings at the dinner table, tune in to Noel Fielding and chums as four former contestants take on some seasonal challenges. Expect deliciousness.

The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel Season 3, Amazon Prime Video

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. The time when ’50s-housewife-turned-standup-comic (and fashion icon) Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) returns to Amazon Prime Video.

Season three of the award-winning show sees Midge and her agent Susie (Alex Borstein) out on the road during a whirlwind tour. Snappy dialogue, incredible cinematography and Tony Shalhoub: what more could you want?

Gordon, Gino & Fred: Christmas Road Trip Three Unwise Men, ITV Hub

Fresh from their European culinary adventures, Gordon Ramsay, Gino D'Acampo and Fred Sirieix are back and searching for the festive spirit in Morocco. The trio find themselves on camelback and travelling the Agafay desert in search of local hospitality and tasty dishes.

Only Fools and Horses, BritBox

Christmas isn’t just a great time for new laughs and great drama. It’s the perfect excuse to go back and rewatch a classic.

You don’t get more classic British than Only Fools and Horses, and you can watch it all on Britbox. We recommend reliving Christmas special “Heroes and Villains” for that Batman and Robin moment alone.

Blackadder’s Christmas Carol, BritBox

Ebenezer Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson) is the nicest man in England. Which might come as a surprise to anyone who’s watched the exploits of his ancestors, all remarkably called Edmund.

The Spirit of Christmas (Robbie Coltrane) shows this saintly Dickensian his forebears’ dastardly deeds in this fantastic excuse to get the cast back together for more historical hilarity.
