Te Aka is a Māori language dictionary that is easy to use by searching for Māori or English words. It includes the ability to filter search results, and to save definitions to a Favourites list. There are currently over 24,000 Māori headword entries in the database, which is being added to over time.

As well as English meanings, it has example sentences with translations for many entries. It even has photographs and audio clips for Aotearoa/New Zealand native fauna and photographs of flora, important people and other items where a photograph will aid understanding.

In addition to the words one would expect in a traditional dictionary, it also has encyclopaedic entries designed to provide key information about plants, animals, stars, planets, heavenly bodies, important Māori people, key ancestors of traditional narratives, tribal groups, ancestral canoes, song types, musical instruments, Māori names for institutions, country names, place names and other proper names. There are also detailed explanations of key concepts central to Māori culture. Comprehensive explanations for grammatical items are included, with examples of usage, as are idioms and colloquialisms with their meanings and examples.

The Te Aka Maori app is the companion to the popular website and forms part of the Te Whanake Māori Language learning series.

A suggestion

I have used this for the last 4 years. Great app. My only suggestion would be is to change the fact that if you exit out of the app briefly, that it would remain at the word you have searched for. I often search words then go to emails, word docs etc...and if I need to return I have to type it in again new note: Thank you for finally updating the above issue. Love the new look as well

This app has been rebuilt with a new design and bug fixes. It also has a new name - Te Aka. Please update if you haven't already!

Like the revamp but slow to open?

Can’t see any way to contact developers so leaving this…

The revamp looks great but the app seems slower to use. In particular, it takes around 5 seconds from opening for the splash graphic to resolve and the search bar to become active. That’s a little annoying for regular use.

Ngā mihi nui

An awesome resource. The old version and now the new, both a trusty go to.
However, there is no way to contact us, provide feed back, make suggestions, reference why could be an improvement or mistake.
Seems very closed and exclusive. Even “app support” on the App Store does not go anywhere helpful.
