Ratings and Reviews
Decent
The New Zealand Herald App and offerings have improved over the years. There are fewer grammatical mistakes, nonsensical sentences or repeated paragraphs; and the content has improved IF you’re willing to pay. However, I personally find the ‘premium’ pricing to be ridiculous. Instead of constantly having specials bring the regular price down! $6 a month would be reasonable and would attract more customers, helping to balance out the reduced revenue. IMO it would also prevent people from cancelling their subscription once they have started - it’s easy to forget about a $6 monthly charge but much harder when it’s 4x that amount!
The worst part about the premium system IMO is that they do not allow nonpaying customers to comment - even on free articles! Why? If you have an account and can read the article, you should be able to share your opinion.
No News is Good News
I write the review below some time ago but nothing seems different except that eventually I but the billet and subscribed. Now under each heading on the app I see need that is under the ‘premium’ heading also. I assume it means that premium content is eventually released to everyone however on the app, there is nothing new under ‘premium’ unless you manually refresh by pulling downwards. I also don’t get why, as a premium user, I still get adverts masquerading as stories in my feed or, in the case of short videos embedded in stories, why I have to sit through an advert. Isn’t that why I pay fir Premium? Finally, last night the app just stopped working so I deleted it but this morning when I tried to download the new version I was told I couldn’t download st this time. Great work NZ Herald! ——————————————————————————— Nice one NZH. Diverted to the App Store this morning to update my version. On getting to the App Store the new version just prompts me to Open’ and when I do, all I get is a back background and your logo ie nothing happens. By the way, I looked at your new website today and almost anything that wasn’t rubbish was premium content. I’m not subscribing to read poorly written articles by your journalists as I see too many grammatical errors, spelling errors and complete lack of knowledge about how to correctly structure a sentence when using a subject and an object. I just won’t go to your website anymore and I’m now deleting the app.
Biased opinion led infotainment
Unfortunately NZ Herald has become a hotbed of rightwing opinion led infotainment. Writers like Mike Hosking, Heather du Plessis Allan, and Ashley Church are not journalists, they are simply writing to influence an audience. It has been heartbreaking for me to see a once trusted national institution lose its soul. Furthermore the terrible desktop ui where crazy ads drop at you from all angles. You go to click on something and it shifts as you click. It’s more like a bad computer game than a news site. There is simply no way I would pay for the drivel noted above, and the equivalent of computer dodgems while I’m trying to read it. Laughably bad. However the one thing I do miss is your excellent rugby analysis. At least that has bot become polluted by political opinion. Herald should be ashamed of contributing to echo chambers that will slowly tear the country apart. This is the source of trouble in US. You have a social responsibility to do balanced reporting. And balanced opinion. If hard roght view is shown an equivalent left view should be shown. So all readers can see balance and form an informed balanced opinion.
