Notes is the best place to jot down quick thoughts or to save longer notes filled with checklists, images, web links, scanned documents, handwritten notes or sketches. And with iCloud, it’s easy to keep all your devices in sync, so you’ll always have your notes with you.
Features
Powerful note-taking
• Add attachments — PDFs, photos, maps, web links and more.
• Record and transcribe audio directly into a note.
• Scan paper documents with the built-in document scanner.
• Secure sensitive or personal data in a locked note.
• Create checklists. Make a shopping list, a wish list or a to-do list, then tap to tick off items as you go.
• Apply different text styles, such as heading or body, bulleted lists, highlighting and more.
• Tap next to section headers to reveal a chevron to collapse text.
• Add tables to quickly organise information.
• Use your finger, or Apple Pencil on a compatible iPad, to sketch directly in your note or an inline PDF. Choose from a variety of brush styles and colours, and add lines and grids to a note for easier writing and drawing.
• Take a Quick Note without opening the app — add Quick Note to your Control Centre, swipe up from the bottom-right corner with an Apple Pencil on iPad, or use Fn-Q on a keyboard.
Organise and search
• Search for text in notes, your handwriting, and even inside scanned documents and photos like receipts or bills.
• Link from one note to another to connect ideas, content or any information. Try typing >> for a shortcut to add links while writing in your note.
• Keep your notes in folders and subfolders, or add tags to categorise them. Type or handwrite tags directly in your note — like #cooking or #expenses.
• Automatically organise notes in a Smart Folder based on filters. Create rules to filter for Date Created, Checklists, Attachments and more.
Collaborate
• Collaborate on entire shared folders or on specific shared notes.
• Mention friends to notify them of important updates and link them directly to a shared note.
• See what others added to a shared note while you were away with Activity view, a day-to-day list summary of activity from each collaborator.
Notes for Apple Watch
• View all of your iCloud notes right from your wrist; you can also pin notes, complete checklist items, or create new notes with dictation or Siri.

I am a new IOS user. I recently bought an iPad and I love it. Notes is an extremely useful tool and after discovering all its functions, it will probably stay with me until the end. I'm still learning all these features, but there is one thing that I think would be an extremely useful tool. If such an option already exists, I would like to know how to activate it. I want to change handwriting using Apple Pencil to text. I know that other note-taking applications have this function, so I think it would be a great modernization that will attract more fans of Apple Notes. Best regards and I hope that you will positively consider my suggestion.
Missing Checklist menu on iPad
Mario PL
Translation:With great sadness, I must note that in version 18, as well as after updating iOS to version 26, the Notes app on iPad lacks the contextual menu option Checklist (in the Polish language version: Lista kontrolna), which allows adding new checklist items (as formatting of selected text) within a note. The menu item (Checklist) appears only when the selected text is already part of a checklist, but it is not possible to create a new checklist from regular text. This functionality existed (and still exists) in Notes on iPhone (as a separate formatting bar with text formatting, checklist, table, and attachments), but on iPad there is unfortunately neither such a bar nor the appropriate contextual menu. This is a missing feature that is extremely frustrating. I have reviewed a large amount of documentation regarding the missing menu and found similar questions from other users who noticed the same issue, but unfortunately I was unable to get any help.
Bugs of iOS 16 that need to be solved
Kajetan2001
This app doesn’t work with iOS 16 and above. Turn it off while I’m working on it, and it doesn’t memorised what I’ve been writing with my Apple pen. that the most major bug for me as a student because when it’s happening during lectures I losing information. words that I’m writing with Apple pen are sometimes scattering during writing so I need to write whole words again. I hope those bugs will be solved very quickly because it’s a shame for that they happen on a first place. I’ve been working on this app for a year and I'm happy with its design although files from apple pen could be separated for a A4 format so when I’m converting my notes to PDF they won’t be cut in a middle. That looks very bad and unable to read. Please react because I’m hoping for this app to be wonderful again.
Many bugs and glitches
iPadOS 17 user
When I made a note, erased something, then two letters moved to a next tab and couldn’t move. To fix this I needed to remove the tab, but after that another tab for no absolute reason became huge- I also had to remove it. Another two tabs glitched- the text, which had to have a two story tab somehow fit in one, crossing into another topic’s tab. The worst thing about this is that it happened in 5 minutes. (Sorry for my English)
