best iOS synth of 2022

Nambu is amazing, versatile, and deep. It covers a massive amount of ground: it can go from very synthy modern sounds to natural instruments to experimental, weird noises.

I don't think it's accurate to judge a synth based on the quantity of presets, unless you never plan on programming it, which would be a shame. Nambu is delightful. For those looking for presets, you might periodically check in on your favorite iOS music forum(s). There are several sound designers who have released packs for the dev's previous synths.

Wah wah no presets

Make your own! Another beautiful iceWorks creation thx !

This is outstanding work from a top-notch developer who just keeps getting better.

Maybe there are details on matters of preference that could be different. I’m sure there will be the odd mistake iceGear will fix in short order. The manual needs more detail about what functions do what.

Still, what a synth.

If there is one persistent pain point in iceGear (and some other) synths for me, it is the frequent lack of numerical indicators on the controls telling the user what the actual setting is for a function. Computer software has one of its core strengths in precision and the reproducibility of results. Without the MIDI (or extended MIDI) values of settings visibly available, setting up mathematical relations or reusing settings combinations in new presets becomes much harder than it needs to be.

Having percentage values rather than MIDI (which happens in this synth often when numbers are provided) seems superficially helpful to users, but those then need conversion into MIDI to know what’s happening in the synth.

It’s great to work by ear and feel, but the MIDI values of the many settings here, and in all synthesizers, have multiple uses. The synth already uses them - it’s just a question of sharing those figures with the user, who may and often does want to use them as well.

But, all that said, this is in general a beautifully realized instrument. It was an immediate buy for me and - if you might find use in this creativity-encouraging, deeply controllable synthesizer and you don’t fear or hate that kind of control - it should be for you.
