Description
Low english proficiency (LEP) Korean small business owners in Alameda experience significant situational trauma due to violent and nonviolent crimes in the community targeting their businesses. Main themes and challenges identified that contribute to the trauma include:
1. Crimes are committed often by people in the neighborhood (several businessmen report that the looters are people they know).
2. Lack of police support and guidance
3. Frequent vandalism
4. Ineffective police response
5. Police reporting process is not clear
6. Language poses a challenge when filing police reports
7. Victim support information is hard to navigate
8. Lack of guidance and tools for filing police reports and insurance claims
9. Lack of culturally competent legal and insurance support
10. No central place to access tools, forms and information or get answer to questions
Community Thrive has four goals:
i. To help individuals seek and access support due to their exposure to violence (concrete damages, medical and psychological injuries);
ii.To increase awareness of symptoms of trauma and exposure to community violence.
iii. To increase perceived social support and reduce stress during a crisis; and
iv. To visualize community violence as an issue in immigrant communities and ultimately to reduce trauma symptoms related to community violence exposure.
