In this crossword game, the board positions have randomly-assigned values, and the object of the game is to maximize the total value of positions you control by your word plays, either by filling empty positions, or by taking over opponent positions. With the words you play, you project power on the board. And the net projected power on a position by you and your opponent (the machine) determines that position's risk of capture. The prospect of dramatic gains/losses resulting from 'stealing' high-valued opponent positions by strong word plays is a unique source of intensity in EagerWords. Pressure to play quickly is maintained by allowing the machine to play out of turn after waiting only a limited time to receive a play from you. The result is an exciting game of chance that you can play at different levels and speeds to exercise your language, scene analysis, and planning skills. Lower play levels limit the machine's vocabulary and make it easier to win. Faster speeds allow you less time to think, allow the machine quicker out-of-turn plays, and make it harder to win. By varying the level and speed of your games, you can find a sweet spot that fits your sensibilities, while still keeping the game challenging and fun.
