I saw the ad advertising that this AI would actually play d&d. Ok, I’m an avid rpg fan so I gave it a try. The interface was slick and I liked how it jumped right in. The AI set the scene, told me who my character was and set me up with an adventure seed. Then it presented me with several reasonable choose-your-own-adventure style options. Great! Then I asked it which version of d&d we were using. It turns out it’s built on 2e which is a weird choice considering the current edition is 5e. Ok whatever. Well I make a few choices and it’s going fine. Within 10 min I make a choice and it says “this might take a while. Please hold on, I’m thinking…” and NOTHING. that’s it. I prompted it to continue and after a few tries it agreed to proceed BUT it forgot all details of the adventure we had begun. It forgot my character completely. It said we had not determined any adventure details. Essentially the AI just took a dump and forgot everything. Well, I’m glad I was only 10 min in. My friends and I are in our 40s and we have experimented with using chatGPT AI to play Ironsworn and D&D. We have had some success but we find that the AI seems to forget things. For example, chatGPT starts playing d&d but then switches to another rpg system for no reason. And then it’s hard to switch back. It also seems to eventually start mixing up details from earlier in the game. For example, the AI randomly gave me a magical sword but then later on tells me I have a magic shield, not a sword. Stuff like that. Or it forgets my character’s name or stats. The “mistakes” seem to be random and unpredictable but bad enough that you can’t reliably actually play an prg using the AI alone. We have found that it’s best to write down details of names and locations just like in a live d&d session but then ask the AI to provide story prompts or to create random encounters. It’s quite good for that. Anyway, this app isn’t great for d&d. Skip it.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and comprehensive review. We appreciate the time and effort you put into trying out our AI for D&D and RPG games, and we're sorry to hear about your unsatisfactory experience.Your feedback is particularly valuable to us as we continually strive to improve the app and its functionalities. I would like to address a few of your points.Firstly, the choice of basing the AI on D&D 2e is a product of several factors, including data availability and licensing issues at the time of the AI's training. We understand that this may not be the most current or popular edition, and we're exploring ways to incorporate newer rulesets, including D&D 5e, in future updates. The issue of the AI forgetting game details or 'thinking' for too long is a concern we're actively working on. We understand how vital continuity and immersion are in role-playing games. This seems to be a flaw in our current state-management system, and our development team is working diligently to address this. Your observations provide invaluable insight into how this problem manifests, aiding our efforts to rectify it.In the meantime, as you suggested, using the AI as a source of story prompts or for creating random encounters is a great way to engage with the app. We're delighted to hear that you found this aspect of it valuable.Again, we sincerely appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you experienced. We're striving to improve and your input greatly helps us in identifying key areas for development. We hope you'll give us another chance in the future once we've improved these features.
