I've used both the IDW app, as well as some of the title-specific apps, like Transformers and Star Trek, and my reaction is mixed. The comics on this app look fantastic, especially for the iPad. The problem is that there is no way to sync purchases between apps or devices. In other words, if I buy a G.I. Joe comic in the IDW app for the iPad, I can't view it on another device, like my iPhone. Nor can I view it my G.I. Joe app. I'd have to buy the comic all over again in both cases.If you take a look at the competition, you'll see that this is a common function. Take the Comixology line of apps for example. If I buy a Walking Dead issue in the Comixology Comics app, I can also view it in my Image Comics app, as well as the Walking Dead app. I can read it on my iPad, or switch over to my iPhone, if that is more convenient. It's not just limited to the world of comic book publishing. My Kindle purchases are available to me on my iPad, iPhone, or Kindle. You just have to sign in. Simple. C'mon IDW! This could be a top-rated app if you just worked out this little flaw. I know it's not a minor undertaking to build a massive database of all your customers and their purchases, but it's worth it. There are thousands upon thousands of us out there who want to read comics, but aren't really interested in collecting them. E-comics is the doorway to that market. I've read more comics on my iPad in the last 6 months than I have in the last 6 years!

Although I have purchased many comics through this app and will continue to do so, I am extremely disappointed by it. The store is great, and the quality of the digital books are awesome, but where this app truly lacks is the "My Comics" section. The layout is very difficult to navigate since it basically posts the books on a wall in alphabetical order. Never mind that different titles are in between other titles based on the first letter, but to make it even worse, there is no option to organize the books in your preferred order. This is an unfair argument since other apps don't allow this feature either, but other apps do allow you to search in the store-style scroll option. The real tragedy with this app however is worse than the organization issues. The book itself. Why IDW decided to make an already smaller reading platform even smaller by adding a 1/2" frame on both sides of the book is beyond me. Never mind the fact that there is no guided-view style technology, but why make the book smaller? You are practically forced to hold your tablet device in landscape mode even when the story does not call for it. What if I want to hold my tablet like a book? I guess I can, but then the panel gets smaller and we enter the circle of sacrifice. This app would get a 5-Star rating if it removed (not fixed) this frame and improved on the organization of the books.Bottom line. If you love IDW properties like G.I.Joe, Transformers, etc., then get this app and be ready for a love hate reading relationship with IDW. If you are looking for the best digital comics experience, then stick with that other app we all have.
