What is Aira ASL?
Aira ASL provides remote, on-demand ASL interpreting for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. Simply open the Aira ASL app and tap a button, and you will be connected instantly to a professional ASL interpreter via remote video, who will work with you to accomplish tasks. The ASL interpreter will use your phone’s camera and microphone to facilitate communication, greater efficiency, and enhanced independence. Since you can access Aira using your own smartphone, you will be empowered to have ASL interpreting at your fingertips for whenever the need arises.
Aira ASL is developed using the same trusted and secure technology Aira offers the blind and low-vision community. With this new app, Aira is delivering on-demand video remote interpreting for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community in public spaces, enhancing access where it is limited or nonexistent today and breaking down barriers. Aira ASL is your app for best-in-class ASL interpreting, at the tap of a button.
How does Aira ASL Work?
It’s easy to get started with Aira ASL!
1. Download the Aira ASL app
2. Open the app and tap the “Call Aira” button
3. An ASL interpreter will pick up your call and work with you to accomplish whatever task you are interested in. Using the phone's front-facing camera, microphone, and speaker, you can either prop up your device or hold it in one hand while signing with the other. The interpreter will then facilitate communication by signing what is spoken through the microphone and voicing what is signed through the camera.
4. Once you’ve accomplished your task, end the call.
5. Call back anytime you like—Aira ASL is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and you’ll never need to book in advance. Just call and access ASL interpreting—on your own terms.
