I honestly can't say enough about Outread! I've turned so many friends on to the app because, let's face it, it's incredible. Even friends of mine who have never been a big fan of reading absolutely love it. The ability to sync between pocket and other 3rd party apps makes reading what you want, when you want, well, simple! I'm the type of person who always overloads themselves with the number of articles they'd like to read, and because of Outread, Im able to get through them easily and effectively. I personally prefer the "RSVP" mode because I find myself reading faster than the highlighted words in the "Guided Reading" mode. However, the ability to switch between the 2 is a great feature! I've always read at a good pace without sacrificing my comprehension, but with Outread I'm WAY faster(no surprise there!). It takes a little bit of time to figure out how you, yourself, can get the most out of the app, with its settings for variable speeds and the number of highlight words. But let me tell you, once you do, you'll be reading faster than you ever though possible! I, myself started around 450 words per minute and now go back and forth between 650 and 720 words per minute depending on how dense the material is. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT, RECOMMEND IT, AND WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITHOUT IT!

Though I haven’t tried out the app yet, I chose this reader because the developer’s privacy policy states that customer data will not be sold. The developer does use Google Firebase so I looked up the privacy policy for that service provider, which states that end user data usage is determined by the customer’s (app developer’s) policies. Other reader apps do not provide this level of privacy protection. I’ll update this review after I’ve had enough time to make an opinion on it.Update: I’ve given it a few weeks now and I have significantly improved my reading speed. I love how easy it is to import articles and books. However, there’s already a good library of books included in the app, so users may not even need to import any books. I recommend this app for increasing reading speed without losing comprehension.

    Developer Response

Hello, we don’t sell your data. Our only revenue stream is in-app purchases. We use Google Firebase only for anonymous product analytics that aren’t tied to your identity. In the current version of Outread all your actual content (documents, books, etc.) stays on the device. We’ll be introducing an optional cloud sync and backup feature in a future update – if you decide to use it, your content will be synced through our own server. If you have any other questions, you can always reach us at contact@outreadapp.comThanks, Arek

Outread is the best RSVP reading app. It supports epubs and groups of more than one word at a time. It has good import options like Pocket and Dropbox. You can see the surrounding text and read normally when you pause in case you lose your place. And the new version finally let you set a large font!My biggest complaint is the max speed of 1000 wpm. Setting a speed significantly higher than you can comfortably handle helps with training. I want to set it to 1500 wpm and read something i don't care much about, then go back down for stuff i do care about. 1000 max isn't fast enough for me because i can read a lot of stuff at 800+ and i can actually read some easy stuff, where i don't need great comprehension, at 1000+. i hope they will increase the max speed to 2000 or more, which i'm guessing would be a very easy change.

  • So much better then three other speed-reading apps I have

I've only had it for one day, but very pleased by a number of it's features. 1. You can drag the highlighted reading segment back in the article any time you need to reread something. If you're using the app to read articles you actually want to comprehend, rather than just practicing your speed on, this is essential. 2. Being non-– techie, I was quickly able to add the Outread bookmark to Safari on my iPhone. But I haven't yet done that correctly with my iPad. However, it is very easy to cut-and-paste a URL into the Outbreed app. This means that I can read all of the New York Times articles I want within the app. Much more efficient than having to first save the articles to Instapaper and then access them that way 3. I very much like having the article itself grayed out as the highlighted segment moves along. Somehow this is more pleasant for me then seeing words or phrases flashed on the screen without any sense of where I am an article. Again, quite pleased that I will be able to use this app for most of my iDevice reading. I'm looking at the developers webpage, it appears that they will be adding more improvements in the future. Nice to know there's that level of support

Most of these apps show a single word at a time. For me this makes it very difficult to comprehend some of the things I'm reading. (Outread now supports that style of reading with the RSVP mode for those that like that approach). For me though my favorite feature of Outread is the Guided Reading mode, which it has always featured. This shows the full text but dims everything except for the selected words that you're currently reading. You choose the speed and the selection automatically advances throughout the piece of writing you're reading. If it advances too quickly you simply tap the screen and it pauses and allows you to catch up.The only additional features I'd like to see are more robust and persistent statistics of your reading speed and the amount you've read.

  • Love this app !!

I have to admit i was reluctant at first, but this app purchase might be the best investment i have done . The articles from web opens up in a snap and it feels really pleasant to read. I also love the fact that it automatically keeps moving forward through the article without waiting for me to swipe it up. All i need to is focus on reading. You can also copy paste the text or read tons of classics. If you are serious about improving your reading speed while practising with real life web articles, i think this is one of the best apps for that. You also have the option to vary reading speed and amount of highlight. Very well designed keeping user in mind. Go get it.
