Good for common/modern stuff, useless for ancient/medieval

If you have any kind of coin background, this app won’t do anything for you. However, if you don’t know anything about coins and are looking to identify things from the last 200 years, this can be of tremendous help to you. It will yield dozens of results of similar-looking items that can help you in determining what coin you’re holding. Unfortunately, for older or more complex coins like ancient Romans, ancient Greeks, or medieval Mongolian (Golden Horde and assorted Khans), the app returns suggestions that rarely come close to what you’re looking for. Oftentimes, a search for an ancient Roman or Greek coin might return none or just one ancient result but dozens from the last century. In most instances, this appears to be because the sources used for images are somewhat limited, so it’s difficult for older issues like this that don’t have many examples in those sources to match. The tremendous variation in detail and image clarity of these older issues also prevents more accurate matching the further back you go.

Not the time saver I thought it would be

It does a good job of recognizing the type of coin, but then you have to choose from a list to narrow down the date, etc. then, when you click on the button to determine the value, you’re presented with another long list of possible choices. You can do this quickly with a regular coin book.

Maybe I expected too much. I was thinking that perhaps the technology had progressed enough to where it would detect the date and even the condition of the coin and give you a value based on that. Maybe that’s in the future with the current state of how AI is progressing.

Absolutely perfect

Very useful for me when I find a coin in a whole other language and can’t identify the country and it’s really fun to estimate how much it’s worth too helped way more then I thought it would and I couldn’t recommend it more. Really great if your like me and started coin collecting recently and don’t know too much about coins. Overall perfect.
