Perfect for passing time or a new hobby

The app is very straightforward and easy to use! The practice is easy to do with an Apple Pencil or finger, and I love that the lessons show you how to easily sketch out your shapes, teaching you how to branch out and draw more independently in the future.

I am currently using the free trial and love sketching while watching tv. It is quite relaxing, and there’s a good amount of fun characters to choose from!

I have just a few suggestions for some future updates;

1. Most importantly, please add more info about what the subscription includes. As the app is new, it isn’t quite clear if the weekly charge only includes access to the current pro selections, or if new content will be added on a regular interval. I’d also love more options for payment intervals, ie weekly, annual, biannual, etc.

2. Development of the points system further to gamify drawing. Currently when you first log in and complete a drawing, you can see how many points you earn. However, it’s not easy to find what those points mean. How many points are possible? It would be fun to unlock new things, profile avatars, and other perks as you earn points.

3. Common drawing features in other apps would be great! Things like holding the pencil down will cause a line to snap straight, or holding to draw a circle. Integrating these features that we often use in drawing apps would make this a really valuable teaching tool.

All of that said, this app is just days old at this point and is a great start! Looking forward to seeing where it goes!

Developer Response ,

Thank you so much for your detailed feedback! I appreciate each point you've raised, and I'm glad to reply to them individually:

1. I completely agree with you regarding the subscription screen. We’re constantly working on the interface and we will definitely make the subscription screen more informative and implement more subscription options with upcoming updates.

2. We're currently focused on developing new gamification features, such as achievements, which users can unlock by drawing more. Thank you for the avatars idea! It sounds great and it gives a big space for encouraging artists draw more to reveal new fun stuff.

3. We’ve noted your request on new drawing features and we will do our best to expand the available tools as soon as possible!

Once again, thank you for taking the time to provide your insights and improvement suggestions for DrawUp. Your feedback is extremely helpful to us. Wishing you a wonderful day ahead! 💛

Best Regards,
Alex

Probably Excellent, But The Epitome of Subscription Culture Greed

Alex Kunchevsky is the creator of this app. He puts out great Procreate how-to videos on YouTube. I typically hate newsletters, but I was subscribed to his. That’s how I learned of his app. I was pretty excited about it because I need lessons on how to draw better as well as how to get the most out of Procreate. This would be a better way to learn than drawing along to YouTube videos, everything is in the app.

I did the one free lesson, which I couldn’t color because adding color to your drawings is a Pro feature. As is everything. Even though the newsletter said it was free.

I know developers need to earn a living so I was expecting there to be a free and a premium version of this app, even though the newsletter called it a free app with no caveats.

If the free version was good enough, I’d have probably paid for the premium version, if it was within my budget, even though I do hate that everything is a subscription.

But there is no free version. You get one demo lesson. After that, it’s $7.99 per WEEK, and you get a measly 3-day free trial. Anyone with even a moderately busy life wouldn’t have time to accurately assess if the app is right for them.

Subscribing weekly is the only option, with no monthly or yearly subscriptions. A conscious and greedy decision on Mr. Kunchevsky’s part. Monthly and yearly subscriptions are typically discounted. It’s a better value for the subscribers and the developer gets a larger payment upfront. But he wants none of that, he wants you to pay him approximately $415 per year, full stop. Absurdly expensive, no matter how great the app is.

Instead of getting a subscriber to his app, Mr. Kunchevsky lost my subs to his email newsletter and his YouTube channel. When will developers learn that reasonably priced subscription-based apps, or even better, apps you can just purchase like you used to be able to buy software would be more lucrative because more people would be willing to part with their hard-earned money?

Developer Response ,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on our app.

I understand your concerns, but I would like to clarify some points regarding DrawUp. The free version of DrawUp provides access to dozens carefully crafted illustrations, which have been accurately wrapped into the lessons line by line. Also, I'm working hard to enhance the app's value by regularly introducing new illustrations for the benefit of our free users.

Honestly, it's tough to receive a 1-star rating from someone who has found value in my videos and lessons. Creating this app has been a passion project, requiring months of dedication and substantial financial investment, all with the intention of providing a helpful tool for individuals keen on learning to draw.

Your feedback is really important to us, and I genuinely appreciate every review, regardless of its rating. My team and I have ambitious plans for DrawUp, and we’d be more than happy if you will give DrawUp one more chance in the future.

Thank you once again for sharing your thoughts, and I hope you have a wonderful day ahead! ☀️

Best Regards,
Alex
