Description

Use the new FCC Mobile Speed Test app to test your mobile broadband speed! This will help the Federal Communications Commission make its National Broadband Map more accurate.

The ad-free FCC Mobile Speed Test app offers three testing options: Challenge speed tests, Crowdsource speed tests and QuickCheck speed tests.

Challenge speed tests enable you to dispute, or “challenge,” your provider’s coverage shown on the National Broadband Map. Once there are enough “failed” tests within a certain area and at different times of day, a challenge will be created, which will require a response from the provider and may result in corrections to the Map.

Crowdsource speed tests help the FCC evaluate mobile coverage across the United States and verify the accuracy of the National Broadband Map.

QuickCheck speed tests let you test the speed of your wireless network connection without submitting a challenge or sharing your contact information with the FCC.

To learn more about the FCC’s National Broadband Map, go to www.fcc.gov/BroadbandData.

App Features:
• Test the speed of your mobile connection by running a “Challenge” speed test, a “Crowdsource” speed test, or a “QuickCheck” speed test.
• Use the “Repeated Test” option to perform back-to-back Challenge or Crowdsource tests for up to
4 hours without having to initiate a new test each time.
• Set a data cap to limit the amount of data the app can use for tests over a one-month period.
• View test results in the History section.
• Export and save results as a CSV on your device or email yourself a ZIP file with test results.

Privacy:
We protect your privacy, and you can choose to share data with specific parties. Refer to the Privacy Notice for more details or get the app for more information.

The FCC may share your contact info with your mobile broadband provider if you choose to run a Challenge test so that the provider can use your data plan and other technical information to fully evaluate the test result.

Barebones but works

Barebones app but it gets the job done.

I’ve had no real issues with it and have been using it for a little bit now, conducting dozens of tests.
Hopefully this helps improve the FCC’s ability to collect and go after ISP/cell providers

Developer Response ,

Thanks for your feedback. We appreciate your help in improving the FCC’s mobile coverage maps.

Uses roaming and not my wifi

The old version measured both my wifi (Frontier) or my cell carrier (ATT) depending on if I had the wifi button on or off.

Now, if I have my wifi button on (Frontier), it doesn’t show 0.0 when my wifi is completely out of service. It keeps measuring the cell service (ATT) which won’t be accurate for my location using MY wifi. This is a bug and needs fixed.
I use this to see what my Frontier Mbps is and now I can’t get that info!

Also, this entire process is longer now and not easily all in one place for history results (you have to open each test one by one) and you also have to enter checkmarks to access the ap each time you enter the ap. I’ve been using this ap since 2015 and each version just gets worse and worse.

Developer Response ,

Thanks for your feedback. You can use the app to test the speed of your mobile cellular connection or Wi-Fi using the “Crowdsource” or “QuickCheck” options. If you have Wi-Fi turned on and are connected to Wi-Fi, then the app should test your Wi-Fi connection. The “Challenge” test option requires users to test only their mobile network connection. More information about each test feature can be found by clicking the “Info” icon on the app home screen.

Requires personal info

I’ve been using the older FCC Speed Test app for a few years now along with another speed test app. Today when I tried to open it, it said I MUST download the newer “mobile” app version. OK, I download. Go to run and I see something about being government associated and now it requires my personal info? Don’t think so. Check reviews and confirm what I thought. Almost everyone feels the same. Guess I’ll be going back to the other app and deleting this one.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your feedback. A recent update to the app allows you to run QuickCheck speed tests without providing any contact information. The FCC’s Mobile Speed Test app is designed to allow users to submit mobile speed test results to the Federal Communications Commission to help improve the mobile coverage maps displayed on the National Broadband Map (https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/location-summary/mobile). Contact information is required for submitting challenges and crowdsource tests. Learn more about how the data submitted is shared and protected: fcc.gov/AppPrivacyPolicy
