Description

The Apple Watch® boasts a phenomenal heart rate sensor – so why use additional gear when you already have one on your wrist?
Using the HRM Heart Rate Monitor app, you can simply and reliably use your Apple Watch® to track your heart rate with your cycling computer.

Unlike other heart rate monitoring solutions, you don't need any additional hardware. With the HRM app, all you need is your Apple Watch® and your iPhone® to reliably send heart rate data to any compatible bike computer via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
The HRM app is compatible with almost any BLE-equipped bike computer. Please find the up-to-date compatibility list here: https://dominikmaglia.com/hrm-app-user-guide/#device-compatibility

You don't even need to worry about carrying your phone in your hand - the app works seamlessly without any impairment to your phone, allowing you to focus on your ride.

The HRM app simply reads heart rate data from the Health app using HealthKit and your data is stored securely in the Health app. It does not create any data. No complicated settings or redundant tracking of your workouts and training zones. The HRM app provides just a simple and reliable alternative to traditional chest straps.

Mind that this is a paid app that requires a subscription. But worry not: You can test the app for free for seven days. If you don't like it or there's an issue with your setup, you should cancel the subscription before the trial ends and you won't be charged a dime.

The subscription is auto-renewable and automatically renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account will be charged for renewal at the price listed within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period. Subscriptions made on iOS devices can be managed and auto-renewal turned off in Account Settings for your Apple ID after purchase. Once purchased, refunds will not be provided for any unused portion of the term. But no need to worry, you may cancel at any time.

You can find our terms of use on my website: https://dominikmaglia.com/hrm-app-terms-and-conditions/

Be sure to have the app installed on both your Apple Watch® and your iPhone®. It does not work with just any of the two.

Not Quite Ready for Prime Time

I tried using this app with a Wahoo Elemnt Roam. It connected fine and worked well with the Roam. Communication is via Bluetooth. The issue I have is that after using this app and the bluetooth connection, the Elemnt Roam will not easily connect to the Wahoo Elemnt app. Simply turning the Elemnt Roam off and on doesn’t work. I had to forget the Elemnt Roam bluetooth connection and reboot my iPhone to get the Elemnt Roam to connect to the Elemnt app. Too much work to get the Elemnt app connection to the Elemnt Roam hardware re-established for me - that is why I believe this app is not quite ready for general use with a Wahoo Elemnt Roam. The bluetooth connection issue needs to be resolved first.

Hi BikenShoot,
Thank you for your insightful review! Unfortunately, these limitations are tied to the Wahoo's firmware so I don't really have control over that. Still, there may be a better procedure and I will investigate the issue you describe. In the meantime, I hope the app is still helpful to you.
Best,
Dominik

Needs to handle disconnects better

I fully realize there are challenges in making this product work. That said, if I stop during a ride and walk away from my bike for a bite to eat or a drink, I am guaranteed I’ll have to go through some sort of a dance to get my heart rate showing on my computer if I want my workout to continue, and it always makes me regret forgetting my heart rate strap.

I kinda want my money back. I’m canceling my subscription and will only re-up if I see a commitment to making this work better in the future. I am using a Wahoo ELEMNT which is not on the officially supported list. That will be changing soon and if that makes things better I will update this review.

Disappointed on Garmin Edge Explore

The heart symbol on the connected devices screen was alternately brighter and dimmer, (a beating heart?) which I assume meant it was receiving a signal. However, no heart rate showed up on the data screens. I was disappointed that it didn’t work and I canceled the free trial.

Hi John18901,
Thanks for sharing your feedback! I'm not sure how a successful connection is indicated on the first generation Edge Explore but I suspect that the heart rate sensor wasn't active, only "known" to the device. Usually this happens when the Garmin Connect app is still active in the background. To fix it, fully terminate the app (like so: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201330 ) and restart your Edge Explore, then activate/connect the heart rate sensor. I hope this'll help!
Best,
Dominik
