Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, usually in the legs. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can cause leg pain or swelling, but also can occur with no symptoms. Wells Criteria were derived from a number of studies by Wells et al in an attempt to stratify risk of DVT in symptomatic outpatients, since at the time, the clinical diagnosis of DVT was thought to be inaccurate, leading to widespread overuse of confirmatory imaging.
