Amazing game, but not flawless

Retro Goal is a fantastic game. As the successor to Retro Bowl, I had high expectations for the game and in many ways, those expectations have been exceeded.

However, I do think that the switch from the credits system to the new currency system might not be the best change. The cost of upgrades, contract renewals, etc. seem disproportionately greater than they were in Retro Bowl, and it almost feels like you’re being almost forced to spend real life currency to keep your team afloat.. obviously this is a mobile game so in-game transactions will be important but in Retro Bowl it felt like they weren’t necessary, something I can’t say about Retro Goal.. this is exemplified by the fact that some players in game are only available for purchase with actual money (also it would be nice if the game didn’t practically penalise you for accepting a contract from another team by giving you terrible players and terrible facilities regardless, it doesn’t make sense that accepting a contract from Man Utd would give you awful players, forcing you to have to spend actual money to be able to compete in the Prem, this was also not an issue in Retro Bowl, and thus made it feel a bit more realistic/fair, not incentivising the spending of actual money). It would be nice to see a more balanced in game currency system, but outside of that, I think the game is exemplary, the mechanics are great and it’s really fun, great game.

Phenomenal with room to grow

I’d first like to say that Retro Bowl was incredible (and still is). So when I heard about Retro Goal, it was an instant download (and I instantly paid for the full game before the free trial expired). And I’m not regretting it AT ALL.

The gameplay is amazing first off. Easy to learn, hard to master kinda thing (at least for me). It’s great fun too, while also being a tad bit realistic in terms of its physics of how players dribble and how the ball reacts. As someone that doesn’t play a ton of soccer games (occasionally fifa), the difficulty is actually pretty difficult lol. I play on normal, but hard seems to be actually pretty hard.

I LOVE the career mode aspects personally. It’s relatively the same as Retro Bowl, but with some new features that are exclusive to Soccer/Football (youth academy, transfer list, etc). Though, the thing that would make this game even more perfect would be a World Cup and/or Euros implemented into the game in the future. But having the “Champ L” in the game makes it insanely fun as well. But keep up the great work! Hoping you can make a Retro Basketball or Retro Hockey game in the future, but loving the two games so far! Keep up the great work!

Great, but too geared towards in-app purchases

Long time player and fan of Retro Bowl from the first version who watched it improve over time with better features and game play, I was excited to see the release of Retro Goal. Luckily for Retro Goal, it includes a lot of the features that took time to develop with RB so it’s pretty stacked from the jump. They really did a wonderful job with the various leagues, game play, and management. I’m incredibly excited to play this for for the long haul just like I’ve done with its predecessor. However, I’m afraid its in-app purchase heavy approach may not allow it. I’m a casual gamer at best. More accurately, I find a few games I like to play on my phone when I’m taking a break or trying to unwind, and play them for a long time. After playing for several hours of the past two days, you run through team money and credits fast, much faster than you ever would on RB. I’m happy to pay a few bucks here and there per month, or whenever necessary, which I did regularly with RB but Retro Goal has in-app purchases EVERYWHERE. In just 24 hours, I’ve spent $15 and my team isn’t all that stacked despite winning most of our matches. We’re also broke again. It just seems like they’re cashing in a bit too much on this one. Hopefully they will find a nice middle between the two games. Devs need to make money, certainly, this just seems aggressive. 5 stars for the game itself, but I’m ranking it 4 due to the in-app costs.
