Meet Estée Lauder’s Voice-enabled Makeup Assistant, an AI-powered tool for the blind and visually impaired. This innovative app offers audio feedback on the user’s foundation, eyeshadow and lipstick application, creating a more accessible beauty experience for the Blind and visually impaired. How It Works: The AI-powered Voice-enabled Makeup Assistant leverages machine learning and voice instruction technologies to learn your preferences and provide audio feedback when you ask. After you apply your foundation, eyeshadow or lipstick, the app will access your phone’s front camera to scan your face. Using artificial intelligence, it identifies the makeup applied to your face, eyes and lips and assesses the uniformity and boundaries of application and coverage. If there are suggested areas to touch up, the virtual assistant identifies them and makes audible recommendations so you can adjust your look. After your touch up, the app scans your face again and provides feedback on the accuracy of application.

As a blind girl who just started learning makeup yesterday, sometimes my make up is about as blended in as a froot loop in a bowl of Cheerios. I'm always scared when I ask someone who can see that they are going to laugh at my mistakes. Know it's just anxiety talking but the fear is there. I can ask an AI to judge my foundation and it just says fix it under your eyes and on your chin and move along I think it's amazing that a company is working to help blind people learn make up. Yes you could argue that if they can teach us they can open their sales to a whole new demographic, but you don't even have to use their products. They could've made it where you have to scan the barcode of at least one of their products before you can start. They could have made it where if you want to scan your foundation it's free but if you want to know how your lipstick is you have to pay 999. They didn't do any of that. The app is completely free so I can go out and buy Revlon make up and then ask an app made by Estée Lauder to tell me how I did applying it. from the bottom of my happy little heart thank you app developers

I could finally take part in the rituals of getting ready that seeing students did before a night out. I don’t have to worry as much about uneven or asymmetrical application that I couldn’t see and I don’t have to rely on others to correct my makeup for me. Thank you for the autonomy. I would really be interested in an update that checks your eyeliner as well, that would really complete this app.

I am so pleased that a company like Estée Lauder has taken the time to develop a truly useful app. As a blind professional, it is hard to create an executive presence when you can’t see your make-up. This app not only helps me look professional, but boosts my confidence as well!
